My Old Raincoat
E Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh no
She's giving back my old raincoat
The one I said she could keep
Okay
She's taking back her umbrella
Well that's alright with me

Oh why
I feel like I'm a fighter
Who only wins despite my broken bones
The winner stands alone

Every pocket has a hole, there is no hope
I'm walking 'round in my old raincoat

Oh yeah
She's tearing up my old letters
She's setting fire to the heap
Oh joy
She says she's feeling much better
SHe says it's easy to sleep without me there
In the cool night air

The sun is shining, the sky is blue
And I am cold
Just walking 'round in my old raincoat

Now I know I'm really free
Oh yeah
Now I know I'm really free
Oh why
I feel like I'm a fighter
Who only wins despite my broken bones
The winner stands alone

Every pocket has a hole, there is no hope
But I search them all looking for a note
The sun is shining, the sky is blue
ANd I am cold
I'm walking 'round in my old raincoat

Now I know I'm really free

Overall Meaning

In "My Old Raincoat", E sings about a failed relationship and the aftermath of its ending. He expresses his feelings of being a fighter who only wins despite the broken bones, meaning that he has gone through much pain and suffering in the relationship but still managed to come out on top. He acknowledges that his old raincoat, which he has been walking around in with holes in the pockets, is a symbol of his emotional state. The raincoat represents the emotional baggage he's carrying around from the relationship, even though he's no longer with the person.

The first verse deals with the return of his raincoat and the fact that she's taking back her umbrella - a sign that she has cleared everything up from their relationship. E, on the other hand, is still wallowing in the remnants of their affair, as if he hasn't really moved on even though he thinks he has. The chorus reinforces this theme of feeling alone and broken, walking around in his old raincoat with no hope.

The second verse reveals that she's also burning his old letters, probably love letters or anything else that contains emotions and memories of their love. She tells him that she's feeling much better without him, implying that she's ready to close that chapter and move on. E compares his situation to a sunny day where the sun is shining and the sky is blue, yet he feels cold because he's carrying his raincoat with him.

In the end, he finally accepts that he's free and no longer attached to the pain of the past. He is now finally moving on and is on the right track to better days.

I bought this album in 94. Such a great collection of beautiful songs about a sad, broken person trying to wear a smile. Love every song.

Rory Steele

I know it’ll never happen but all I want is a 30th anniversary reissue of both E albums. I reckon it’s his best stuff.

Love this song in particular

“The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and I am cold. I’m walking ‘round in my old raincoat”

I still play this album. (Doesn't the beginning sound like "More Than a Feeling" by Boston?)

Great & Forgotten Records

Actually, yes. It does. I haven't noticed that before.
