@Mr 3ppozz Glad to hear that. People often don't want to listen, which is a big part of the divide.

A big part of the reason for the dislike of the ending was because of bad writing. The concept of the Reapers destroying civilizations for the purpose of keeping them from creating AI and going to war with one another is ridiculous, especially after the Reapers literally witness the quarians and geth make peace with one another. But... whatever. The reason for the Reapers isn't as egregious as the actual ending itself.

The Crucible, which was never found in either of the previous games, somehow magically comes out of nowhere, and somehow every species found it, didn't know what it was or what it did, but built it anyway. They could have easily fixed this writing gaff by having Javik point out the location of the data, and that the protheans were close to finishing it in secret, but were betrayed. But instead they made Javik DLC, and tried to make other previous cycles be a part of the mix as if the Milky Way was somehow fighting back against the Reapers across time.

The ending itself is against everything that the Mass Effect games stand for. Mass Effect is about making choices, and suffering from the consequences of those choices. The Councilor Choice in Mass Effect 1, the Collector Base Choice in Mass Effect 2, the reason you got to pick those endings was because there was more to come in game 3. But to have the ending of the trilogy end up in a choice rather than being the entire culmination of all of the choices Shepard has made thus far is outrageous. We should get the chance to pick and ending. Our Shepard should get an ending based on their actions, not on what we think looks cool. And if we get a good enough ending, Shepard should be seen being extracted from the Citadel and should be seen with the crew and their love interest again. I can see them not wanting to show the future, but at least they should have given us a conclusion to the characters we all loved.

Now, if we're talking about the specific endings themselves, there's a big problem with all three. And that's the destruction of the Citadel and the relays. Destruction of the Citadel means it would have stopped its orbit and come crashing to Earth, causing an extinction event. So... there's that. But let's just say the Citadel stayed intact, but the relays did not. Somehow, all of these species in the galaxy who had, until ME3, never once questioned the origins of the relays and Citadel, suddenly figured out how to rebuild them while trapped in Earth's system. And managed to find the materials, and the time to build them before the other species starved to death. It's a ridiculous leap of logic because of the demand for the extended cut, which they weren't planning on making. BioWare thought they'd leave it at "All Reaper stuff destroyed! Now everyone gets to live their lives their way without the stuff that is literally necessary for them to get home!" They didn't think they'd have to explain it because they wanted to leave it intentionally vague. Instead of giving us a decent conclusion, they wanted to pawn that off on us.

Each specific ending has its issues, but for me personally, I don't like Synthesis because it resolves all conflict and destroys any future for the series. Everyone is organic and synthetic and as such, they can all communicate flawlessly with one another, therefore, no wars, no mercenaries, no Terminus Systems, no Omega... no Mass Effect. Any future of playing during another galactic crisis, or potentially just playing as a turian on the Citadel, or a new recruit for a merc band, or an asari investigator... all of that potential gone because BioWare wanted to make Shepard into literal Space Jesus. Don't get me wrong, there were several ways to implement sacrifices for those who wanted their Shepard's story to end there. But for everyone else, we should have gotten a living Shepard, and we should have gotten a conclusion that asked us, "What's going to happen in the future now that the Reapers are gone?" But no. Either we wasted all of our times trying to get the geth and quarians to stop killing each other only to destroy the geth and EDI, or we eliminated the entire future of the franchise, or Shepard becomes super-galactic overlord of the entire galaxy by taking over the Reapers.

These endings could have been some of the conclusions. Maybe your Shepard's choices made you have to sacrifice the geth in order to destroy the Reapers. Maybe siding with the Illusive Man on the Collector Base made it so that Shepard could upload her sentience into the Reapers. Maybe by saving David Archer and pursuing Cerberus' goal to advance humanity could have ended in Synthesis for those who wanted it. But there also should have been a way around it all. There should have been a "Shepard destroys the Reaper AI, kills Reapers, lives to make or adopt babies with love interest."

There's always risk with "artistic visions" in video games. They play fine for movies, or even linear games with static characters where the player is playing the perspective of a set character and doesn't get to make choices to alter the ending. But in Mass Effect? One of the greatest sci-fi games in existence due to its choice making, its alien friends, lovers, and partners, its exploring the galaxy, and its overarching goal of saving the galaxy from a seemingly unstoppable threat, the forced artistic endings that we got were just... not what we wanted at all.

Now... this is my personal opinion. But I think if BioWare were smart, they'd put in an option in the remaster to ignore the starchild, bypass the "Geth and EDI genocide button," kill the Reapers, and have Shepard walking away from the Citadel half-dead, but still smiling as they're celebrated by the entire galaxy, and then this leads to the Citadel DLC. I doubt it's going to happen though, which is why I'm rewriting the entire trilogy myself.

I think the Control ending was the one I went with during most of my playthroughs, making Shepard the ultimate protector of the Galaxy (a literal shepherd, if you will), but Synthesis definitely has the best music. Thanks for extending it, GA!

Saarebas Adaar

Ouch. Right in my feels. I'll just go curl up and cry now... That's always this ending I choose.
