I dont know why I was led to watch this. I have seen many documentaries on D-Day. But this one is absolutely the most accurate and best narrative I have ever seen. Im 74 now. But when I ran across it and started to watch it. I couldn't stop. Even as I make this comment,
my eyes fill with tears 😢.
My dad was in the US Army 29th division that landed on Omaha Beach that day, and I SAW HIM. At 1:01:54, he is the soldier sitting next to the cliff with others looking directly at the camera. My God!! He was probably 20-21. I know it is him because I have a couple of pictures of him just before joining the service. And one pic of him after they made it into Normady.
He was one of the few lucky ones that made the landing, and God had a plan for. (ME!)
My dad never talked very much about that day or the war. All he would say to me is, "Son, no man should ever have to endure and see what we had to face and saw. It was pure hell!" I know he had a Silver Star and several ribbons my sister has, and he was a Sargent Major when he was discharged. I have his strips.
So I never pushed him to talk about it. I lost my dad in 1979 from a massive heart attack.
I had the opportunity 5 years ago to go to Normady and visit Omaha Beach and the Normady Memorial American Cemetery. That day was a beautiful, quiet day, and I stood in the cemetery, I just lost it! Not only because God kept my dad safe but all the men who sacrificed their lives on that bloody day. Maybe it was just me, but it was one of the most chilling and saddest days of my life! Now I know why I was led to watch this documentary. I'm going to call my sister and tell her to watch it!
Dad, I'll always love you for your service and giving us life ❤😢❤.

My father, due to being in the Air Force in the early 1950s was sent to Germany. He and some of his pals went to see Auschwitz. He was taken aback by actually seeing and experiencing that death camp. He said when they went to see the "ovens", you could stand in one spot and feel warm, but when they stepped over to another spot, they suddenly would feel a cold chill until they stepped away. He never forgot, or lost his slides, about what he saw at Auschwitz. The pictures we saw from those slides he snapped as he toured the camp gave us girls a clear and unmistakable impression of what death camps were like.

This is the best documentary I have ever seen on 2nd world war. It's not possible for me to forget such a beautiful piece of work, which I ended up watching with tears in my eyes. Really feeling sorry for those unknown faces, lost their young lives in a foreign beach with inhospitable conditions. My salute for those brothers again.

Très beau documentaire, captivant. Tout y est, à la fois la hauteur de vue et la mise en valeur de l’individu. On est transporté, on se sent dans l’évènement, avec les soldats. J’ai particulièrement apprécié les expressions qui se lisent sur les visages, le soldat allemand qui joue de l’orgue dans une église détruite. Respect à tous les soldats, mais aussi aux cameramen dont certains ont perdu la vie. Sans leur courage et leur professionnalisme, il serait difficile de conserver la mémoire d’un tel événement. A voir et a revoir sans modération.

Tout est bien montré, expliqué, détaillé et le petit "plus", la couleur ! 1h40 de documentaire qui nous montre les hauts et les bas du fameux jour J, avec ses préparations, ses inventions, bref, un moment très agréable à passer, à se plonger au cœur de cette partie de la seconde guère mondiale. Both of my grandfathers fought the Germans in WWII. I know that they took part in the fighting in France, though one of them told me he arrived after the storming of Omaha was over. He said he was glad he missed that one. Nonetheless he saw his fair share of horrors over there and fought in the battles depicted involving Patton's army. He helped liberate a concentration camp as well. After the war was over he came back and worked two jobs to support a family. My other grandfather had succumb to ptsd and alcoholism and spent the rest of his life homeless shortly after having children. I never got to hear his story. I am very grateful to both them for the sacrifices they made. They don't call them the greatest generation for nothing.

I’m already crying, at the faces of the soldiers in the duckboats and the ones who made it through the beach. The stillness of their faces, the stare, the exhausted slump. Those men had just experienced a terrible and terrifying day full of sensory overload and biological stress and fear, seen their fellows drowning, getting blown to pieces or shot through. Their bodies and minds had just gone through something as shocking to getting thrown off an incredibly high cliff- falling and falling and falling, not knowing when you’ll see the ground and your end; or if there’s a miracle that there’s anything that’ll break your fall. Hours and hours of intense biochemical activity, grinding, booming, smells of smoke and dust and burning, thunking of the boat doors dropping, the zip-ping of bullets, sweat, blood, pieces of humans, sand everywhere in everything, all with the very large chance that you’ll be dead in minutes, that you’re running knowingly toward death. But also with the big hope that you’ll get through. Generally, I mean. Not everyone thinks or feels the same ways. So, thank you for bringing this to us all! I’m sure it helps people in a lot of ways.

I dont't know who is responsible for the intro of this documentary but give him a damn raise. This is without a doubt the best intro I've ever seen. The music, the camera shots, hearing the numbers of what they brought up for this operation, the original sounds and so on. It's honestly a perfect intro that makes you hyped in my opinion. What an incredible documentary, it’s so hard to take in the shere size and scale of the whole operation from all the hard manual work going into building those barges and prep work and servicing for the machinery, aircraft , munitions and supplies and making sure everything ran like clockwork for the struggle that lied ahead. Just wow. not to mention the heat being right in the middle of summer hats off to all those who did there part serving for there country and fellow allies among the shores 🙏👏

Ferroconcrete was made to build ships. I grew up in a town on the coast of British Columbia that has a large lumber mill on the water. They have a breakwater there for the log pond that is made up of six ferroconcrete Liberty ships. Still floating 80 years after being left there.

J`ai été très touchée par ce documentaire historique et par tous ces films qui ont été prix par ces caméramans qui voulaient nous faire voir comment tous ces soldats n`ont jamais abandonné pour que la liberté soit le prix de leur courage. Toutes ces prises de vue authentiques et très déchirantes à la fois nous permettent de revivre ce grand évènement historique de l`humanité. Sans ces soldats provenant de divers pays, nous ne serions pas là où nous nous trouvons actuellement. Je ne leur offre non seulement ma reconnaissance mais aussi un honneur digne de leurs actes.

I remember in another documentary where a Canadian soldier was asked how he felt at the end of June 6 (it was his first day of combat as well), and he responded that when things settled down during the night the realities of what had just transpired hit him like a freight train all at once and caused him to break down. The documentary did a credits for the veterans interviewed at the end and for him it it mentioned that he fought all the way to Germany's surrender, but his three closest friends in his unit were all killed before that.

@@billclarke1131 Unfortunately no it was on TV about maybe 6 years back. It was jointly released with ones about WW1 and the Korean War and I think they were part of the same series. If thats the case its an older series too because the WW1 one had interviews with vets from that war too.

If it helps the Korean War one mentions at the end that one of the men interviewed died before the documentary's release, so if you find that one it should be easy to find the other two.

so muh sacrifice by both sides. The Germans had no other option. While many people try and argue a pride in doing so, everyone seems to forget how terrible Germany's economy was for years after the first world war. WW2 would have never happened had the treaty of versaille been fair, not for the leaders but for the people who had no decision in the war. It left the German people open to manipulation. Hitler would never be able to do what he did if not for the punishment of normal working lass people.

My Art Teacher was the Official Photographer at the executions. I begged him to let me see the photos as his descriptions were mind blowing. The week before he retired he finally brought them in. Wow. Every condemned man was photographed at the gallows being read his charge. Then with the noodles around his neck. Then after the drop from the front. Finally with the noose cut from the main length but tucked into the right side of the neck laying in a plain wooden coffin with a chalk board giving name, date etc. A few were quite gory as eyes had popped out. Thanks Mr Marshall. That was 1978 so he'll be safe now.

Most of the Airborne troops were conscripts. Extra $50 a month jump pay wasn't accepted by volunteers because of too many AAA shootings on friendlies. Not like today when friendly fire doesn't happen as often.

To blurr or censor anything in incredible footage such as this one, to me, betrays part of the lessons of war footage like this gives us. I believe people should see how truly horrible it can be without filters.
On the other hand... these are real people with real faces, real families, descendants, and that impact can be very different on them...

My Uncle Ernest Gorveatt landed with Canadian North Nova Scotia Highlanders on that day. He fought to Caen and was wounded fighting the Panzer Division that they ran into. He returned later before Falaise Gap and fought all the way to Calais where a shell fragment sent him back and finally back to Canada.
Thank you for recognizing the Canadians! They were ferocious fighters that showed no mercy after 11 of their brothers were murdered in a church cemetery.

I just watched because of the film 🎥 . Did not understand a word . It was breath taking.
I was watching with tears in my eyes because my grandfather fought on Omaha beach .
Occasionally he told stories , he was not sentimental. But he had tears in his eyes as he recalled the day of landing at Omaha Beach. Understand why .

Both of my grandfathers fought in the Pacific. Sadly I was too young to understand how time is limited. It's impossible to wrap my head around the amount of total destruction we can ship overnight to anywhere in the world. Today when we watch movies it seems so crazy and far-fetched when they show anti-aircraft fire and the like. Then you watch the actual recordings of it, and the movies had to tame it down to make it more believable. Watching the actual footage after the movie Pacific, my jaw was on the floor!!!

In my long lifetime we have moved from the “Greatest Generation” who rescued European democracy in WWII to the “worst generation” of MAGA who want to cut and run from supplying weapons to the heroic Ukrainian democracy, even though they are doing all the fighting and dying. We were simply doing to Russia what they did to us in Vietnam. MAGA is not just turning its back on the democracies of Europe, but dishonoring our many heroic Vietnam war vets.

My father was a captain in the US Army and my mother was a nurse in VA hospitals. They would cry if they knew what MAGA has done to our country. It’s sickening what MAGA has done.

Amazing - the achievement to plan and execute such a great endeavor. So many sequences I have never seen before. Still looking for my dad amongst the hundreds of faces in this incredible film. He was there - and made it home ! I work at an air base now where there is a memorial to the US Paratroopers who took off from there.

I've been looking for a ww2 documentary that had more details about the planning and actual landing on Normandy and I think I finally found it. Thanks for the almost 2 hour video that felt like a 20 minute video that had my eyes glued to every movement on screen. Gaulle Walked around like he had battled hard and took France like it was his, but i did not see him do much.

Mon père à combattu durant les 6 ans de guerre en Europe avec les forces armées canadiennes d'outre-mer. Il à combattu comme interprète sur le champs de bataille au sein du régiment le fusilier Mont-Royal à Dieppe en 1942, en Sicile en 1943, en Italie en 1944 où il à affronté les unités SS dans la ville d'Orténa, puis il a débarqué en Normandie le 6 juin 1944 sur la plage de Juno entre Courseille sur mer et Bernière sur mer, où il à combattu en Belgique, en Hollande jusqu'au 8 mai au matin où la guerre prit fin à Hambourg.
