The band has released four albums since their formation: "Peace, Love, Death Metal" (2004), "Death by Sexy" (2006), "Heart On" (2008) and "Zipper Down" (2015). Despite their band name, Eagles of Death Metal is not a death metal band. Hughes stated that a friend was introducing Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played a song by the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was within the death metal genre, Homme then referred to Vader as "The Eagles of Death Metal". After hearing this phrase, he wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like. In a 2003 interview Homme described the sound of the band as a combination of "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals." Jesse Hughes is known by fans for his enthusiastic interaction with audiences at live performances.
While the band were on stage at Le Bataclan in Paris, France, on November 13, 2015, the audience was attacked by terrorists wielding automatic rifles, grenades and suicide vests. The death toll inside the venue was 89, including the group's merchandise manager, but the band members made it safely out of the venue via a door backstage.
Kiss the Devil
Eagles of Death Metal Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Who'll song his song?...
Who will love the devil and his song?...
I'll love the devil!...
I'll sing his song!...
I will love the devil and his song!...
Who'll love the devil?...
Who'll kiss his tongue?...
I'll love the devil!...
I'll kiss his tongue!...
I will kiss the devil on his tongue!...
Who'll love the devil?...
Who'll sing his song?...
I will love the devil and his song!...
Who'll love the devil?...
Who'll kiss his tongue?...
I will kiss the devil on his tongue!...
Who'll love the devil?...
Who'll sing his song?...
I will love the devil and sing his song!...
The lyrics of Eagles of Death Metal's "Kiss the Devil" song are a chant-like repetition of the question "Who'll love the devil? Who'll sing his song?" The chorus line is answered by the singer of the song, who boldly asserts "I will love the devil and his song," and repeats the phrase in subsequent stanzas. The central motif of the verses is the ambiguity surrounding love and the power dynamics of attraction. The devil, a traditional symbol of temptation, evil, and danger, is irresistible to some, and the song's protagonist is one such person.
The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways. The song might be seen as a literal invocation of the devil or could be read as a metaphor for a rebellious, indulgent lifestyle. The singer may be portraying himself as a willing participant in a dark, mysterious world that he is eager to explore, regardless of the consequences. The song's lyrics also employ a form of dramatic irony, as the singer knowingly proclaims his devotion to the devil while the listener is left to ponder what the consequences of such a choice might be.
