One of the truly fine composers of that era. Unfortunately, the styles of the  time did not survive beyond the 1980s. I'm glad to see this video exists. It's a wonderful performance, but somewhere, for those not familiar with what Earle was doing, someone should accompany this video to explain how the "Available forms" work for the musicians. Hats off to the NEC for not neglecting the bulk of the late 20th century. Someone give my best regards to D'Anna Fortunato!

Thanks for this very fine recording of one of Brown's important pieces. I'm heading to teach a class on contemporary music notation in China, and this video record will be extremely helpful in conveying the concept of "open form." Bravo!

Brown was largely influenced by the Abstract Expressionists painters, and also by Calder mobiles, and anything with variable form and content. This composition is so variable that no two performances are likely to be the same, but all performances will have the same "sound world", and be recognizable as "Available Forms".

Enjoyed this very much. But I think the date of the piece in the description is incorrect...?

In the 1960s I heard a performance of AVAILABLE FORMS II for orchestra reportedly with a bit of Mayazumi in it! Probably the memorable result had a caramel centre never to be heard again!
