Easy Lover is the Brooklyn-based duo of multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Wimmer and singer Kali Holloway (The Affair, Day For Night) – who Pitchfork says “has the kind of voice that sounds like it emanates from her entire body." The outfit makes music that is complex yet accessible, minimalist but comfortably spacious, and thoughtfully crafted yet effortlessly rendered.
Jeremy Wimmer and Kali Holloway first bonded over a shared love of classic pop melodies, synth washes and dreamy soundscapes. With those foundational elements to build on, the two have created music that feels like faded pictures set to song – romantic, dusky and gently creased around the edges.
Their self-titled debut EP includes three songs that are, in short, songs to swoon to. “End of the Season” – the lead track – begins with woozy synths that lope toward a chorus of lullabying keys, pulsing (heart)beats, and Holloway’s towering vocals. “New Maggie” winds strings in sinuous curves through lush, romantic synthlines, a crashing backbeat and the band’s omnipresent pop sensibilities. And “Robo-Doris” swells from a singular electronic drone to a voluminous blend of Wimmer and Holloway’s Brian Wilson-esque vocal harmonies and Girl Group beats.
Easy Lover’s beautifully composed songs have inspired some of dance music’s most inspired artists, who lend their talents to remixes of lead single “End Of Season.” Rewards (Aaron Pfenning, formerly of Chairlift) offers up a version of the song that is wholly new, filled with gleaming synths and grinding rhythms that could cut grooves into the dancefloor. British producer Elan Polushko (Rong Music) has reconfigured the song into a more lurking, mysterious piece in which Holloway’s vocal flicker ahead of and behind ticking percussion. And Gavin Russom (DFA) is typically innovative, taking the songs most alluring sections and reconfiguring them into a wholly compelling new track.

Nothing nothing
Nothing ever stays the same
No heart no love no pain
We come from nothing we return to dust
Without a home you never get lost
The lyrics "No heart no hope no faith, Nothing nothing, Nothing ever stays the same, No heart no love no pain, We come from nothing we return to dust" tell a story of disillusionment and resignation. The singer is conveying a sense of emptiness and nihilism, suggesting that without emotions like hope, faith, love, and pain, life becomes a static and unchanging cycle. The reference to coming from nothing and returning to dust reflects the transient and ephemeral nature of human existence. It's a contemplation on the futility of it all, implying that our emotional experiences are what give life meaning and depth.
The repeated use of the word "nothing" emphasizes a feeling of emptiness and lack, suggesting a loss of emotional connection and vitality. The absence of heart, love, and pain highlights the singer's detachment from their own feelings and experiences, painting a picture of a desolate and despondent landscape. It's a stark reminder of the impermanence of life and the inevitability of our mortality. The lyrics invite the listener to reflect on the fleeting nature of human emotions and relationships, and the realization that in the end, nothing lasts forever.
The line "Without a home you never get lost" adds a different layer to the narrative, suggesting that being untethered and without roots can be liberating in a way. It speaks to the idea of finding freedom and self-discovery in the absence of traditional structures or expectations. It could be interpreted as a call to embrace change and uncertainty, to let go of attachments and find solace in the unknown. The juxtaposition of loss and liberation creates a complex and nuanced message about finding acceptance in the face of life's uncertainties and impermanence.
Overall, the lyrics of "Acceptance" by Easy Lover evoke a sense of introspection and contemplation, exploring themes of emptiness, transience, and the search for meaning in a world that seems indifferent and fleeting. The somber tone and stark imagery invite listeners to confront their own mortality and the ephemeral nature of human existence, while also suggesting a path towards embracing change and finding freedom in the face of life's uncertainties.
