Easy Lover is the Brooklyn-based duo of multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Wimmer and singer Kali Holloway (The Affair, Day For Night) – who Pitchfork says “has the kind of voice that sounds like it emanates from her entire body." The outfit makes music that is complex yet accessible, minimalist but comfortably spacious, and thoughtfully crafted yet effortlessly rendered.
Jeremy Wimmer and Kali Holloway first bonded over a shared love of classic pop melodies, synth washes and dreamy soundscapes. With those foundational elements to build on, the two have created music that feels like faded pictures set to song – romantic, dusky and gently creased around the edges.
Their self-titled debut EP includes three songs that are, in short, songs to swoon to. “End of the Season” – the lead track – begins with woozy synths that lope toward a chorus of lullabying keys, pulsing (heart)beats, and Holloway’s towering vocals. “New Maggie” winds strings in sinuous curves through lush, romantic synthlines, a crashing backbeat and the band’s omnipresent pop sensibilities. And “Robo-Doris” swells from a singular electronic drone to a voluminous blend of Wimmer and Holloway’s Brian Wilson-esque vocal harmonies and Girl Group beats.
Easy Lover’s beautifully composed songs have inspired some of dance music’s most inspired artists, who lend their talents to remixes of lead single “End Of Season.” Rewards (Aaron Pfenning, formerly of Chairlift) offers up a version of the song that is wholly new, filled with gleaming synths and grinding rhythms that could cut grooves into the dancefloor. British producer Elan Polushko (Rong Music) has reconfigured the song into a more lurking, mysterious piece in which Holloway’s vocal flicker ahead of and behind ticking percussion. And Gavin Russom (DFA) is typically innovative, taking the songs most alluring sections and reconfiguring them into a wholly compelling new track.
Isolation
Easy Lover Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Blank stare dead eyes leave no solid ground
I only keep walking to walk away
But i'm still getting closer to making the same mistakes
Cities built from the ruins of our past
Side by side we stand so isolated
Forever searching nowhere to be found
My resignation is no cry for help
I got neurosis to keep me awake
The first verse of "Isolation" sets a dark and introspective tone. The singer describes themselves as wading deeper into a metaphorical swamp filled with hollow souls. The people around them seem emotionally detached, with blank stares and dead eyes, leaving the singer feeling like they have no stable ground to stand on. They confess to continuously walking away from situations, yet paradoxically finding themselves getting closer to repeating past mistakes. This suggests a sense of frustration and self-awareness, as the singer acknowledges their own patterns of behavior but struggles to break free from them.
Moving into the second verse, the lyrics shift focus to the cities that have been built upon the ruins of their collective past. The singer finds themselves standing alongside others, yet still feeling isolated. There is a sense of constant searching, as if they are seeking something meaningful or a sense of belonging, but they cannot find it anywhere. The chorus repeats the sentiment of isolation, emphasizing the feeling of being unable to escape the thoughts that consume their mind. It is a desperate attempt to break free from their own internal struggles and find some sort of solace or peace.
The closing line of the verse, "My resignation is no cry for help," adds an interesting layer to the lyrics. It suggests that the singer's acceptance of their neurosis, or mental unrest, is not a plea for assistance or sympathy. Instead, it may imply a form of self-reliance or an understanding that they must face their inner turmoil head-on. The line displays a certain level of strength and courage in acknowledging and embracing their own internal struggles, even if it keeps them awake at night.
Overall, "Isolation" paints a picture of someone who is navigating through a world where others seem emotionally detached and their own thoughts consume them. It's a reflection on the struggle to find connection and purpose, often feeling stuck in repetitive patterns and haunted by past mistakes. Yet, amidst the isolation, there is a glimpse of inner resilience and a refusal to be a victim of circumstances, showcasing the singer's acknowledgment of their own neurosis without seeking pity or help from others.
