If You Knew Susie
Eddie Cantor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have got a sweetie known as Susie
In the words of Shakespeare she's a "wow"
Though all of you may know her, too
I'd like to shout right now

Suzie has a perfect reputation
No one ever saw her on a spree
Nobody knows where Susie goes
Nobody knows but me

If you knew Susie, like I know Susie
Oh! Oh! Oh! What a girl
There's none so classy
As this fair lassie
Oh! Oh! Holy Moses, what a chassis
We went riding, she didn't balk
Back from Yonkers
I'm the one that had to walk
If you knew Susie, like I know Susie
Oh! Oh! What a girl!

If you knew Susie, like I know Susie
Oh! Oh! Oh! What a girl
She wears long tresses
And nice tight dresses
Oh! Oh!
What a future she possesses
Out in public
How she can yawn
In a parlour, you would think the war was on

If you knew Susie, like I know Susie
Oh! Oh! What a girl!

Overall Meaning

The song "If You Knew Susie" is a classic vaudevillian number, first performed in the 1920s by Eddie Cantor. The lyrics describe his sweetie, Susie, who is evidently well-known among his friends, but whose true character only Cantor seems to understand fully. He describes her as "classy" and possessing a "perfect reputation," but also as someone who can be a little lazy and difficult to inspire. Cantor seems to be head over heels for Susie and is proud to say that he's the only one who truly knows her.

The language and tone of the song display typical vaudevillian flair, with its quick pace, humorous lyrics, and exaggerated expressions. Cantor was a master of this style, and "If You Knew Susie" was one of his most popular routines. However, beyond its apparent entertainment value, the song also provides a glimpse into the culture and values of the time. It reveals a world where reputation and social standing were highly valued, and where one's worth was often judged based on how well they could be charming and entertaining.

Overall, the song speaks to the timeless desire to be understood and appreciated for who we are. It shows us that even someone as well-known and esteemed as Susie can still have hidden depths that only a select few can truly see and appreciate.

This is the 1948 movie If You Knew Susie. What an astonishing entertainer Eddie Cantor was! He was before my time but I discovered him (thanks to YouTube) a couple of years ago and he just knocked me out. Brilliant!

Thanks! I was wondering about "1925" -- the first talkie was 1927 (Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer").

There's an urban legend that Cantor requested his tombstone read "Here I lie in nature's nestle, free at last from Georgie Jessel."
