Born Edmond Montague Gr… Read Full Bio ↴Eddy Grant (b. 1948) is a Guyanese musician.
Born Edmond Montague Grant on the 5th March 1948 in Plaisance, Guyana, he emigrated with parents to London, England when he was still young. As a teenager he formed the multi-racial group The Equals. He sported dyed blonde hair, and had his first million-selling number-one hit in 1968, when he was the lead guitarist and main songwriter with his song "Baby Come Back". Grant openly used his songwriting for political purposes, as in " Police on My Back", and later "Gimme Hope Jo'anna" about the then-current apartheid regime of South Africa.
By the early 1980s Grant released Killer on the Rampage, using MTV exposure to have big hits in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia with the '80s techno reggae of "Electric Avenue", and following that up with the title song for the successful 1984 film Romancing the Stone. The album Walking on Sunshine produced the popular tracks "I Don't Wanna Dance" and "Gimme Hope Jo'anna".
Grant owns and operates a leading recording studio called Blue Wave in Barbados, near St Lawrence Gap, and it has hosted some of the world's top recording artists and producers over the years. He has produced music for the likes of Sting, Mick Jagger, and Elvis Costello.
War Party

Me no want to go
Everybody seem to be inviting me to - a war party
Me no want to go
Heard about the last one
So thanks but-no
Thank you
You
And you killed off all the slaves
But no quite
So you killed off the remains
You a look for me
And I'm looking for you
I can't believe what they say about you is true
That you're a bad star just like Pharoah
You killed the children just like Pharoah
Now you send a ticket for me
It don't have R.S.V.P.
Oh Lord
It's a war party
Me no want to go...
You've invited all our wise men many time before
To dance around your fires and even out your scores
And when the tolls taken of the valiant and the brave
The only decoration is the one upon the graves
Oh no
You're a bad star just like Pharaoh
You killed the children just like Pharoah
Now you send a ticket for me
And it don't have R.S.V.P.
Oh Lord
It's a war party
Me no want to go...
Please don't send no ticket for me
No
Don't send no ticket
No
Don't send no ticket for me
If don't have R.S.V.P.
Oh Lord
It's a war party
Me no want to go...
Do you want to go
Say no
Do you want to go
Say no
Me no want to go right now
Me no want to go right now
They invite me to a war party me no want to go...
In Eddy Grant's song "War Party," the singer is being invited to a war party but is hesitant to attend. He has heard about the last one and knows that it was violent and deadly. He points out that those who invited him have a history of violence and genocide, having killed off all the Indians and slaves. The singer is hesitant to attend because he does not believe the stories he has heard about the person who invited him being a bad star, just like Pharaoh, who killed children. The singer does not want to attend the war party because he fears for his safety and does not want to be a part of any violence.
The song could be interpreted in several ways. On one level, it could be a commentary on the violence and brutality of war and the reluctance that many people feel about participating in armed conflicts. On another level, it could be a critique of colonialism and the violence that was often perpetrated against indigenous people and slaves. It could also be interpreted as a warning against blindly following leaders or ideologies without questioning their motives or actions.
