Froese was born in Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Russia) during World War II. After showing an early aptitude for art, Froese enrolled at the Academy of the Arts in West Berlin to study painting and sculpture. In 1965, he formed a band called The Ones, which played rock and R&B standards at popular bohemian nightclubs. While playing in Spain, The Ones were invited to perform at Salvador Dali's villa in Cadaques. Froese's encounter with Salvador Dali was highly influential, inspiring him to pursue more experimental directions with his music. The Ones disbanded in 1967, having only released one single ("Lady Greengrass"/"Love of Mine").
After returning to Berlin, Froese began recruiting musicians for the free-rock band that would become Tangerine Dream.

Learning To Fly
Edgar Froese Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a wind swept field
Standing alone my sense reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky
Tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer
My grubby halo, a vapor trail in the empty air
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Gould blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my mind from the circling sky
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
The song "Learning to Fly" by Edgar Froese tells the story of a person who is taking a risk and attempting to fly, both literally and metaphorically. The singer describes the sense of being pulled towards the idea of flying, even though it seems dangerous and impossible. The fear of failure is present in the opening lines, with the image of a ribbon of black stretching towards a point of no return. The singer also describes feeling like an earth-bound misfit, someone who doesn't fit in with the world around them and longs for the freedom of the sky. Despite these challenges, the singer is determined to learn to fly, even if it means making mistakes along the way.
In the second verse, the singer takes to the air, describing themselves as a "soul in tension." They know that they are taking a risk, but they are determined to fly even though they are condition-grounded. They continue to circle in the sky, watching their own shadow as they fly. The singer recognizes the beauty and uniqueness of the experience, describing a "suspended animation" and a "state of bliss" that can't be compared to anything else. In the end, the singer is still tethered to the land, still feeling like an earth-bound misfit, but they are learning to fly and feel alive as a result.
