A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Edie Brickell Lyrics

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Overall Meaning

The song A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall by Edie Brickell/New Bohemians is a cover of Bob Dylan's original 1962 song. The lyrics of the song can be interpreted in many ways, but generally, the song is believed to depict a conversation between a father and a son. The father seems to be asking the son about his experiences and observations, and the son responds with descriptions of the devastation and destruction he has witnessed. The song is a gloomy and apocalyptic vision of the world and suggests that humanity has brought about its own destruction.

Throughout the song, the son describes the various places and events he has encountered, including walking on six crooked highways, being out in front of a dozen dead oceans, and meeting a young woman whose body was burning. The somber tone of the song conveys a sense of impending doom and great sadness. The lyrics suggest that the world is in a state of chaos and that it is on the brink of destruction due to the actions of humanity.

Despite the bleakness of the song, the final stanza suggests that there may be hope for the future. The son explains that he will continue to share his experiences and observations until everyone can see them. He then declares that he will stand on the ocean until he sinks and knows his song well before he starts singing it. This final message may suggest that even in the face of great adversity and danger, there is still hope for humanity if people work together to create a better world.

Edie Brickell brings something out of the song that even the author Dylan couldn't reach. It sounds like a mother searching the Earth for her lost son and then asking him what kind of life he had since they parted... heartbreaking ... she conveys that beautifully

@cybergrunge3086

Completely agree

@onetrueslave

@@cybergrunge3086 Ty said it more accurately than I ever could. Freaking LOVE this version of this tune.

@philcampbell3924

Respectfully disagree. It's a good version, but the warbly, gravelly, ironic sagacity of Dylan's voice brings out a poetic melancholy that Brickell glosses over. Brickell's sound-engineered "angelic" voice is a dime a dozen in the music industry, so she might make you feel some easy, gone-in-the-next minute emotions, but Dylan made you feel the imagery and poetry of the words themselves, words that echo ancient thoughts and Bible quotes; and since he wrote the song himself, it feels more authentic. Dylan makes you feel a little wiser for having stopped and thought about everything he just said. Brickell? I haven't thought about this cover since the late 90s -- it's pop-forgettable in that way.

@camerondiaztwin

@@philcampbell3924 You may disagree, but calling Brickell's voice "sound-engineered angelic" is LMAO funny.

@cathylee799

Very much aree. I was homeless for 5 years and had little contact with my grown youngest child, who is my blue-eyed son that I love and missed so much. Felt like I had walked through hell and back. I sent this to him at the time. Her voice brings something imperfect and so beautiful to the song..

I just played this song at my brother's funeral last week as a tribute to him..
He was a C7 quadriplegic and had his accident at 18 years old.He had been in a wheel chair for over 41 years.He never complained ever or looked for sympathy from anyone. This film meant alot to my father,my brother and me.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Kid Bear -- what a beautiful choice of songs for his tribute.

Take care of yourself (and your dad! I miss my parents often these days, though I'm in my fifties)

@kidbear8449

@@1michelemichele1 Thank you for your kind words. I am also sorry for your loss. Life moves just too fast.
My brother was 9 years older than me but we were so connected, especially in music and the great outdoors. The 2nd song I played at his service was 'Comes a time' by Neil Young. Both songs just flowed together beautifully on the day. Best wishes for you Micheleland

@rinalore

Your Brother has been freed and flies with the wings of an Angel. He no longer suffers, for that I'm grateful. You were the greatest of families, for him. He'll be waiting at the gates of heaven, with a great big smile, when it's your turn, to meet your Maker. I wish you well.
