Beat The Time
Edie Brickell New Bohemians Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mmmmm,
Ooooh,
Heyyy,

I notice me I notice you,
I see a lot of things that neither of us do,
I notice me I notice you, too
And there are simple things that we don't even try
Anymore

There's a way out of this
There's a way out of this
There's a way out of this
There's a way out of this

Beat the time,
Beat the time

And every time I turn around
We got some clever way to put each other down
And every time I turn away,
I can't decide if I should go or should I stay
With you

There's a way out of this
There's a way out of this
There's a way out of this
There's a way out of this

Beat the time
Beat the time
Beat the time
Beat the time

Beat the time
Beat the time
Beat the time
Beat the time

We can't leave these problems behind,
We can't leave these problems behind,
We can't leave these problems behind

So close the door and
Open your m-m-m-m-mind
Close the door and
Open your m-m-m-m-mind
Close the door and
Open you m-m-m-m-mind

Close the door and
Open your m-m-m-m-mind

Overall Meaning

"Beat the Time" by Edie Brickell and New Bohemians is a reflective song about the difficulties and issues that arise in a romantic relationship. The lyrics convey the message that both partners need to take responsibility for the problems they've created and recognize the little things they've stopped trying to do to keep their relationship going strong. The singer admits they often put each other down instead of lifting each other up and vacillate between wanting to stay with their partner and wanting to leave. They desperately search for a way out of the situation, while also acknowledging that avoiding the problem won't fix the relationship. The repeated refrain of "beat the time" implies that they are attempting to overcome the obstacles in their path before their relationship completely falls apart.

The lyrics suggest that the singer wants to strengthen their connection with their lover by opening their mind and understanding how to make amends. By acknowledging their mistakes and lapses in effort, they hope to find common ground and meet each other halfway. It's a plea for both parties to work together and conquer the challenges they face, instead of taking the easy way out by leaving. The song is a reminder to be patient, take responsibility for one's actions, and work towards a healthier, more loving relationship.

Takes me back to a specific place and time when I had this album on rotation. Great, great stuff. Makes me homesick for the eighties:)

Same here. Bought this CD the day it came out at a Musicland. Heard some of it at the store and took a chance. I think all the songs are great, and it takes me back to a specific time in my life.

I love this album a lot, but the vocal melody of the pre-chorus (0:40) seems totally oblivious to the key that the song is in, and it makes me wince every time.

Just the sorta girl ya dreamed about running into at White Rock Lake on a sunny East Texas day(a body, true East Texas drawl, sexy-ern-hell, & a thinker to boot) back in the early-mid 1970's when ya could still drive around the whole lake and it wasn't one-way traffic through and around. Of course I suppose she is like good Scotch; she is an acquired taste to say the least; it's too bad not too many people get it. Thanks for "SHARING"
