Stubborn Love
Edie Brickell New Bohemians Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Late at night at the bowling alley
Motown and cold beer
She was keeping score with a pencil behind her ear
She knew there was something not quite right, but she could not resist him
Took him home and held on tight
Hugged and kissed him

Never hid his desire to be free
That made him more appealing
Lit a fire underneath a kindling feeling
She made up her mind he was the one
Wanted more than a good time and fun
Used her powers of persuasion

Stubborn love
Hard-headed woman

All the signs and the symptoms were right there
Of a stormy ill-fated love affair
They went in with eyes wide open
He was never her type, but he made her laugh
Inspired belief in a better half
Left her dreaming and kept her hoping
Then she carried his baby like a torch
Got married and then they got divorced
She always felt the fates gave her no choice

Stubborn love
Hard-headed woman

Some people see it coming
But instead of running
They step in the path of a hurricane
Charging like a bull
Rushing like a fool
Stepping on the track of a freight train

Stubborn love
Hard-headed woman

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Stubborn Love" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians tell the story of a woman who falls for a man who is not her usual type. Late at night at a bowling alley, where Motown music plays and cold beer flows, she finds herself drawn to him despite knowing that something isn't quite right. She takes him home, holds on tight, and embraces their passionate relationship.

The man is described as someone who desires to be free, which paradoxically makes him more appealing to the woman. Their connection ignites a fire within her, filling her with a kindling feeling of love and desire. She is convinced he is the one for her, seeking more than just a good time and fun. With her powers of persuasion, she dives headfirst into their stubborn love, even though she may be seen as a hard-headed woman for doing so.

Although the signs and symptoms of a stormy and ill-fated love affair are evident, they both enter into it with their eyes wide open. He may not be her usual type, but he brings laughter and inspires her to believe in a better half. She is left dreaming and hoping for a future together. Eventually, she carries his baby, symbolizing the depth of their connection. They get married, but the relationship ends in divorce, leaving her feeling like she had no other choice in the matter.

The lyrics portray the idea that some people knowingly enter into complicated and challenging relationships instead of running away. They willingly step into the path of a hurricane, charging like a bull or rushing like a fool, even if it means being hit by a freight train. This stubborn love, combined with the woman's hard-headedness, shapes the narrative of the song.

Wow, Edie's back with The Bohemians. Sometimes you can go home again. And their sound is on point. Edie's voice is still effortless & sweet.

Jim Davis

She’s released 2 albums with New Bohemians in the last two years. The new CD “Hunter and the Dog Star” is excellent.

You should check out mamamoo killing voice medley for vocals. This was actually a way better performance than some of the acts they booked.

Weird, I had no clue she was still doing stuff. I heard "What I am" by her a million times in the 90s and it came out in 1986. Definitely ahead of her time.

@daflotsam That's hilarious and pretty cool! Edie has some kind of magic.

I recall a Beck song existing on some PC way back when. It was a great reintroduction. I've been hooked ever since - mostly the Morning Phase album.

@genghisconnie Agreed! One of my favorite albums.
Funny to think the first song I heard from that was due to the title track being a featured Media Player video on a newly bought computer that had the just-released Windows 95 operating system. Time flies when you're listening to good music.
