Born in Kingston, Jamaica as Ripton Hylton, Eek-a-Mouse began his foray into reggae music when he was in college, but did not begin to garner a substantial audience until 1979 with his hit "Once a Virgin". This same year, he changed his singing name to "Eek-a-Mouse", the name of the racehorse he always bet on. In 1981, he cheered up the Reggae Sunsplash Festival, which was still mourning over the death of reggae icon Bob Marley. After this, his fame continued increasing through the year 1982 until 1988, when he released "Eek-A-Nomics", his last full-length CD until 1996.
Eek-a-Mouse is a regular at the Jamaican music festival Reggae Sunsplash and often teams up with reggae duo Michigan and Smiley. He has also been featured on Christian rock group P.O.D.'s (Payable on Death) album Satellite, lending his vocals to the rock-reggae track "Ridiculous".

Mommy, I'm hungry Mommy!
Mommy I'm so hungry...
Please Mommy!
Please!
Cry now
Hungry belly baby don't cry now
Homeless baby don't cry now
Cocaine addict baby don't cry now
Heroin addict don't cry now
They don't eat from this morning
Hungry belly baby bawling
Tired, starving and yawning
People passing and laughing
Hungry too tired to eat
So very weak, cho...
Cry now
Malnutrition baby don't cry now
Motherless baby don't cry now
Fatherless baby don't cry now
Illiterate baby don't cry now
Gangbanger baby don't cry now
Hungry babies must be fed
Hungry has killed them dead
Give them some food without bread
Five on the floor, three on the bed
Baby's father sees that he's leaving
[?], Cho...
Cry now
Bawling baby don't cry now
White man baby don't cry now
Black man baby don't cry now
Hispanic baby don't cry now
Asian baby don't cry now
Baby's mother can't take it no more
[?] by the liquor store
People calling her a whore
But they don't know the score
Winter time is so cold
In a house without no door
Why should they suffer so?
Cho...
Cry now
Hungry belly baby don't cry now
Cocaine addict baby don't cry now
Heroin addict don't cry now
Runaway baby don't cry now
Illiterate baby don't cry now
Malnutrition baby don't cry now
Illegal immigrant don't cry now
Can't afford to go to school
Talk like [?]
Mother is high on mushrooms
Children are so confused
Daddy should have been home soon
But he's out to hustle some food
Cry now
Hungry belly baby don't cry now
Poor man baby don't cry now
Homeless baby don't cry now
Motherless baby don't cry now
Fatherless baby don't cry now
Babies having babies don't cry now
I wanna know why some people
Ain't got no food no clothes no shoes
When some people are
So much money and don't know what to do...
They don't eat from this morning
Hungry belly baby bawling
People passing and laughing
Nobody hear them calling
Them go past (Starving Marvin?)
And all the kids them are bawling...
The song "Don't Cry" by Eek-a-Mouse is a powerful and emotional commentary on poverty and injustice. It opens with a child's desperate plea to their mother for food, setting the tone for the rest of the song. Eek-a-Mouse goes on to acknowledge the many different types of people who suffer from hunger and deprivation - from homeless and addicted individuals to illiterate and gang-affiliated youth. He emphasizes the importance of feeding hungry babies and preventing malnutrition, while also shining a light on the systemic issues that lead to poverty and inequality. The song ends with a call to action, questioning why some people have so much while others have nothing at all.
Throughout "Don't Cry," Eek-a-Mouse uses repetition and imagery to convey a sense of frustration and desperation. The repeated cries of "Mommy, I'm hungry" become increasingly urgent, and the image of children "starving and yawning" is particularly haunting. Similarly, the refrain of "don't cry now" takes on a double meaning - it's both a plea for the children to stop crying and a acknowledgment of the fact that their suffering cannot be ignored.
Overall, "Don't Cry" is a thought-provoking and socially conscious song that encourages listeners to consider their own privilege and take action to help those in need.
