After cracking the Top 10 of the iTunes dance charts in 15 countries with the release, "A Real Hero", featured on Nicolas Winding Refn's hit film 'Drive,' the Toronto-based electronic pop duo Electric Youth stepped back to take time to work on a full-length album. Since then, the duo signed to Secretly Canadian and "A Real Hero" has gained over 18 million plays on YouTube. Austin Garrick, the band's instrumentalist, alongside vocalist Bronwyn Griffin, says of working on their debut, 'Innerworld' (out Sept. 30), "We wanted to make something that had the sense of being timeless. Our ultimate goal is to make a record that will be the favorite album of people that aren't born yet."
Recording took place between the duo's Toronto studio and their home studio in LA. Each space served its different purpose - in Toronto Austin was able deploy his extensive vintage synth collection, making up what he estimates is 80% of analog sounds on the album. In LA, the pair recorded Bronwyn's vocals, of which they share writing duties for -- in their space-- which includes a film projection room. Fritz Lang's boundary-breaking twenties classic 'Metropolis,' among other films played throughout the making of the record, inspired the eleven original tracks of 'Innerworld.' Peter Jackson's 'Heavenly Creatures' inspired their song "Runaway," while other films such as 'City of God,' 'After Hours,' 'Videodrome,' and more, influenced their recordings, where soundscapes bleed into vocals and songs take you on journeys into roads unexplored. 'Innerworld' also features a stark analog synth cover of John McGlynn's "If All She Has Is You."

You can't be there for long
But the seas roll on
So we're staying until dawn
And if the feeling's wrong
We can find a different song
When the heat is strong
No sense in holding on
I lose myself sometimes
Afraid to appear selfish
I lose myself sometimes
But as restless as we are
We'll see another day
And as restless as we are
We can find another way
As a change is taking place
Nothing seems the same
And if we make it down this road
We can make it all the way
To California 1
California 1
California 1
And its been so long
They said it's coming on
And the trees are gone
With the flames that took the fawn
But she grows, she grows again
Always resilient
Such a sentimental warmth
In this hostile atmosphere
Afraid to appear selfish
I lose myself sometimes
Afraid to appear selfish
I lose myself sometimes
But as restless as we are
We'll see another day
And as restless as we are
We can find another way
As a change is taking place
Nothing seems the same
And if we make it down this road
We can make it all the way
To California 1

The lyrics of Electric Youth's song "ARAWA" convey a sense of resilience and determination in the face of challenges. The song starts with the lines "When the heat is on / You can't be there for long / But the seas roll on / So we're staying until dawn." These lyrics suggest that while the situation may be difficult, the singer is willing to stay and fight through it. The line "Afraid to appear selfish / I lose myself sometimes" reveals the singer's vulnerability and fear of being perceived as self-centered.
The chorus of the song provides a glimmer of hope for the listener. The repetition of "As restless as we are / We'll see another day / And as restless as we are / We can find another way" conveys the idea that despite feeling restless and unsure, there is always a way forward. The reference to California 1 at the end of the chorus provides a specific destination for the journey and symbolism for a new start.
The second verse of the song touches on environmental devastation and the idea of resilience in the face of it. The lyrics "And its been so long / They said it's coming on / And the trees are gone / With the flames that took the fawn" suggest a loss of innocence and destruction of the natural world. However, the singer finds hope in the idea that nature can always grow again.
Overall, "ARAWA" is a song about resilience, vulnerability, and hope. It conveys a sense of determination in the face of adversity and encourages the listener to find new ways forward despite feeling restless and unsure.
