@fyvewytches bernstein’s conducting was slow but not lethargic and never emotionless. If you can’t hear the level of phrasing and emotion in this then you weren’t listening carefully enough.
The point of his tempi choices in pieces like this that are especially loved and beautiful is because we love them so much, most performances are rushed and do not allow the audience the time to enjoy the music for itself. He does the same thing when he conducted the Mozart ave verum corpus.

Not sure from your comment but do you realise that he did not write this? Elgar did. Bernstein’s conducting is so slow it’s bordering on the ridiculous. The is no emotion in this interpretation, just lethargy.

Hands down the best version on YouTube! The climax at 4:45 where the drums quietly build into a thunder.. always makes the hairs on my neck stand up.. this piece is just so nostalgic and patriotic for us Brits..it makes me think of the birth and emergence of a tiny island into the world's greatest empire by the turn of the 20th century. Went to the Proms tonight at Royal Albert Hall. The concert was cancelled but the Philadelphia Orchestra played the national anthem and The Nimrod for us and I suppose the late Queen.
It was absolutely beautiful.

I watched this on BBC 2 in 1982, and even recorded it on my Betamax VCR (yeah, I know), so it's great to see it again. He had to work really hard in rehearsal to get the orchestra to accept his tempo, and you can tell they're still uncomfortable with it in the performance. The tension is spine-tingling. Superb piece of music.

@ed2276 ... The composer's own recording is here on YouTube. 'Nimrod' starts at 12 minutes in and is considerably quicker than Bernstein, who starts very slowly but then moves along somewhat quicker as the piece progresses ...

Elgar also speeds up noticeably as he goes along, though whether this was to make sure he got it all onto a 78rpm side we don't know. It hardly qualifies as an 'adagio' tempo however.

I don't know what the orchestra's problem with it would be. All of the Italian markings I have seen on scores are Adagio, with metronome marking of 52 to a quarter note. I put a metronome to this performance and Bernstein is pretty close to that. I don't know if Elgar himself gave the metronome marking, but if he did Bernstein was faithful to it. The orchestra should realize it isn't about what they want, but what the composer wants.

The passion in this is fantastic and Elgar would have loved it. We tend to reject things because we are not used to the tempo or sound - just suspend disbelief and enjoy it..... oh and for the a'tempo detractors - the tempo DOES change. Just saying :)

In fact, Bernstein and the orchestra didn't hit it off at all. They didn't like the way he conducted Elgar and he found them unresponsive. Bernstein was my mentor and teacher for about 3 years before he died. At times he was impossibly egotistical but, in my opinion, an absolute genius. Conductor, concert pianist, composer, lecturer, book writer (and brilliant at all of them) - the list goes on. I've seen this documentary where the orchestra thought they knew best (and no doubt knew of Bernstein's reputation!) and were incredibly rude and dismissive during rehearsals. I'd like to have seen them answer back to Karajan (not that he would have conducted them!). In my opinion it is the finest Nimrod I've ever heard, and I absolutely love the whole Enigma Variations that he recorded with the BBCSO. It's a bit marmite for most people but I know where I stand on it!

As as former classical pianist, I can tell you the hardest, hardest thing to do is sit on stage and play slowly. Memory lapses become much more likely, nerves have more of an opportunity to take over, and you're sure the audience is losing interest. Some of those factors are surely at play in this orchestra. Also, who is this Bernstein, this revolting ex-colonist, to come to England and tell them how to play their music? I love this interpretation, and it surely took a LOT of nerve and persuasiveness to achieve it.

This tempo is agogic, it is absolutely suspenseful. For the listener it is dramatic, and allows each chord and passing tone to become its own individual entity.

For the players... Friggin nightmare. Fine line between playable and suspenseful.

And, let's not forget, Bernstein called out Glenn Gould at a live performance (not exactly verbatim) "I highly disagree with Mr Gould's tempi and concepts. However, Gould is a valid artist and performer. And I feel it's my duty to allow his ideas to be presented to you"

My house has a very close connection to Elgar. Its a slightly odd feeling to to be sat by a fireplace where he would have sat, my feet on the floor boards that he walked on listening to music he composed.

I know many readers are not from the UK and every country has a song or a piece of music that embodies the nation and if you want to understand what it is to be English just listen to Nimrod (and Jerusalem which Elgar also did the orchestration for).

il tempo staccato da Bernstein è evidentemente lentissimo, quasi esagerato e provocatorio, ed è pur vero che nell'esecuzione originale lo stesso Elgar dirigeva la SUA composizione con un Nimrod decisamente più veloce. A rigor di logica Bernstein quindi va troppo piano, non si discute. Comunque il grande Lenny riesce, pur tirando all'estremo l'orchestra ( che si capisce far fatica a seguirlo, ci sono diversi momenti dove ogni strumentista va per conto suo ..) a portare la tensione al limite. Come si fa a discutere un genio simile, che ti porta l'emozione dentro ? Si può essere d'accordo o non d'accordo, .. a me piace enormemente e mi affascina come pochi.

Where did you get the idea that Elgar’s mother was Jewish? She was Anglican and converted to Catholicism. Elgar’s father remained Protestant and was irked by the whole thing. Elgar did have a Jewish girlfriend at one point.

His mother's parents were strictly against the marriage because his mother converted to the Catholic faith.

When his beloved wife Carolin Alice died in 1920, Sir Edward William Elgar was broken. His support and love was no longer there.

Within the context of the entire Enigma Variations, this movement is much too slow--the piece comes to a grinding halt and never recovers. HOWEVER, if you listen to the movement by itself, and think of it as a memorial work that stands alone (not at all the original intent of Elgar), then it does work in that context. But boy, Bernstein really pushes the envelope on this little piece.

When an Adagio for orchestra is conducted "much too slow", there is allways a "danger" that it might loose dynamics and its frases cannot be acquainted by listeners or the whole work lacks expression... But, Leonard Bernstein worked out this marvelous "Nimrod" Variation with such an insight of magnifiscence, that it sustains any critics !

He confuses this with the adagio (sehr langsam und noch zurueckhaltend) in Mahler 9, which he does sublimely. What he sacrifices is the English sense of pudeur and understatement in our management of emotion. The stiff upper lip. This lento assai takes the music out of the shire and into the shtetl. No wonder he faced a near rebellion from the orchestra. Many of whom had played under Barbirolli, who had played under Elgar. Forty years on, it is even more embarrassing than it was at the time.

Agreed, this sounds a bit too Mahler-like for me, a little bit too German. That said, this is my personal preference and not a criticism of Maestro Bernstein.

Well since Mahler conducted Elgar's 1st symphony (according to a famous advert I have frm Gramophone magazine when it was worth reading), maybe Lenny thought this was how Mahler would have played this perhaps too? wink wink! Toscanini certainly got more out of the climax IMHO, and was of course no slouch!

Bernstein was the best conductor ever. Nobody understood the music better than him. This is how Nimrod SHOULD be played.

He was an amazing musician. We all have our views on the "best" conductor. He was certainly brilliant. I love and admire so much of his work, But this was quite self-indulgent, and sad to say, distant from the music itself. It's one of his very rare mis-readings. Let't not dwell on this musical hiccup, but revere his brilliance in pretty much most else of what he did.

Far too slow. This is an orchestra so familiar with the music of Elgar. Elgar himself has set the tempo and conductors such as Adrian Bolt have maintained it (it’s not like we have to guess at a suitable tempo). I’m sure Bernstein would have had something to say to a fellow conductor or orchestra who decided to perform the Chichester Psalms at half speed because “they knew better”.

I agree completely. Elgar provided both an MM indication of the tempo as well as a recording that he conducted. Bernstein is about 3x slower. It's absurd and apparently the orchestra thought so, too.

This is a beautiful piece of music, definitely a slow piece, which is part of its beauty and lushness. But this rendition is far too slow. Rather than pulling one along with it, it crawls.

The orchestra looks half dead. Been working for the dinosaur BBC too long I guess. Shame as it’s otherwise beautiful piece.

This was a clunky, uninspired performance. The musicians clearly weren't following him. I love Lenny and I love this piece. This was just ragged.

They look half-dead having had to endure Bernstein in rehearsal. He took an instant dislike to them and they to him. In fact, he let it be known after they'd played the Elgar in this concert, and recorded it the day after, that he never wanted to work with them again, The feeling was mutual. The first rehearsal was filmed and some of it was issued on the DVD with the concert performance. You get a flavour of his constant starting and stopping in this clip where he has trouble with the trumpet section ...
