Every Day
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyday, everyday I have the blues
Oh, everyday, everyday I have the blues
When you see me worryin', baby, yeah, it's you I hate to lose

Whoa, nobody loves me, nobody seems to care
Whoa, nobody loves me, nobody seems to care
Well, worries and trouble, darling, babe, you know I've had my share
Everyday, everyday, everyday, everyday
Everyday, everyday I have the blues
When you see me worryin', baby, yeah, it's you I hate to lose

Whoa, nobody loves me, nobody seems to care

Whoa, nobody loves me, nobody seems to care
Well, worries and trouble darling, babe, you know I've had my share

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's song "Everyday," the lyrics express the singer's ongoing experience of feeling blue or downhearted. The repetition of "everyday, everyday I have the blues" highlights the consistent and relentless nature of their emotional state. This repetition also suggests a sense of hopelessness and resignation, as if the blues have become an integral part of their life.

The line "when you see me worryin', baby, yeah, it's you I hate to lose" reveals that the source of the singer's distress is someone they deeply care about. The use of "hate to lose" suggests a fear of losing this person's love or presence in their life. This line conveys a strong emotional dependence on this person, as their absence would only intensify the singer's feelings of sadness.

The verse "whoa, nobody loves me, nobody seems to care" gives voice to the singer's feelings of loneliness and isolation. It emphasizes a lack of connection and support from others, leaving them to deal with their troubles alone. The repetition of this line further reinforces the singer's belief that they are unloved and uncared for by others.

The final verse echoes the sentiment of the previous verses, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the blues in the singer's life. The repetition of "everyday, everyday, everyday, everyday" reinforces the idea of a continuous and unbreakable cycle of sadness. The line "worries and trouble darling, babe, you know I've had my share" acknowledges that the singer has experienced their fair share of difficulties and hardships, further deepening their melancholy.

Overall, the lyrics of "Everyday" convey a sense of persistent sadness, with the blues being a constant companion. The song expresses the singer's vulnerability and emotional dependence on a specific person, while also highlighting their feelings of loneliness and lack of support from others.

Cole Porter’s “Every Time We Say Goodbye” was introduced in the 1944 musical revue “Seven Lively Arts.”

Numerous notable covers include ones by Ray Charles, John Coltraine, Nina Simone, Carly Simon, Sarah Vaughan and Robbie Williams. But Ella Fitzgerald’s version (1956) is considered to be THE DEFINITIVE INTERPRETATION‼️

Cole Porter incorporated a musical joke in the song’s score by including a chord change that goes from minor to major in opposition to the lyric “how strange the change from major to minor.”

ONE AGELESS CULT CLASSIC❕ 💙🎵💜

Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed will you remain, Ella Jane Fitzgerald (1917 - 1996)… 🌹

Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little,

Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,

Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.

Think so little of me, they allow you to go.

When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,

I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,

There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor,

Everytime we say goodbye.

When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,

I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,

There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor,

Everytime we say goodbye.

This was the last song at my brother's funeral as we left the crematorium. Every time I hear it now it puts a tear in my eye as I miss him so much. Ella's diction is perfect and is a great lesson for anyone who wants to be a singer. I don't believe there will ever be another Ella.

@hellz1996

This was my parents 'song', he sang it to her when had to go back to the Army, mum said she used to cry everytime
Unfortunately it was both their songs at both their funerals. Most recently my mum's in September 2020.
I miss you mum and dad, beyond life, but you are back together now. xxxx

Your comment made me tear up. Ella was a favorite of both my parents. My late mom would play Ella's music while she cleaned house when I was a child in the early 1960's. My late father raved that Ella on the Memorex commercials was better than "half of the junk on the radio." At least we will always have Ella and great memories.

@@janettamcgee8124 It is a sad song isn't it? Ella came to play not far from where we live, my dad took my mum there, its funny how all the memories come flooding back of your childhood.
Please don't be upset x x

@riderudredd

Played this at my old mans funeral, He said this song was the only thing that ever brought a tear to his eye when he went to see her live. A true soother of the untamed soul.

At my dad's funeral, I was in charge of the tape player (people still used tapes then). I played Ella, alternating with Bing Crosby. He would have liked it.

@magdahearne497

It reminds me of my mum every time I hear it, she used to sing it a lot.... I'm sure our loved ones are just in the next room listening to it 💖

@patriciaphillips6644

I used to sing this to myself in the bath; I sounded good. Now I cannot get into the bath or out again for that matter but the beauty and memories associated with this song will never leave me.

@ericsaur9791

That's beautiful

@canuteomanye5854
