I got it bad and that ain
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The poets say that all who love are blind
But I'm in love and I know what time it is
The good book says, "Go seek and ye shall find"
Well, I have sought and my, what a climb it is

My life is just like the weather
It changes with the hours
When he's near, I'm fair and warmer
When he's gone, I'm cloudy with showers

An emotion like the ocean
It's either sink or swim
When a woman loves a man
Like I love him

Never treats me sweet and gentle, the way he should
I got it bad and that ain't good
My poor heart is sentimental, not made of wood
I got it bad and that ain't good

But when the weekend's over and Monday rolls around
I end up like I started out: just cryin' my lil' heart out
He don't love me like I love him
No, nobody could; I got it bad and that ain't good

So bad, so bad

I got on it so bad, so bad, though folks with good intentions
Tell me to save my tears
I'm glad; I'm mad about you; I can't live without you
Lord above me, make him love me the way he should

Like a lonely weeping willow lost in the wood
The things I tell my pillow

No woman should
I got it bad, bad, so bad and that ain't good

Overall Meaning

In "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" performed by Ella Fitzgerald, the singer talks about being in love with someone who doesn't treat her right. She starts off by saying that people might think that those who love are blind, but she is aware of the challenges that come with love. She has done everything to show her affection, but it seems as though she is struggling to receive the same kind of love back. She compares her life to the weather, changing almost hourly depending on the presence of her lover. When he's around, she's happier, but when he's gone, she's sad.

She likens the emotion of love to an ocean where one can either sink or swim. She knows that the love she has for her lover is so strong that if it sinks, she would also go down with it. Despite the fact that her lover treats her badly and not the way he should, she can't help the feelings she has for him. Although people tell her to save her tears, she can't help but cry for him. She talks about how she feels lost and lonely without him and wishes that he could love her the way she should be loved.

Lyrics:
Never treats me sweet and gentle
The way he should
I've got it bad
And that ain't good
My poor heart is so sentimental
Not made of wood
I've got it so bad
And that ain't good

But when the fish are jumpin'
And Friday rolls around
My man an' I, we gin some
We pray some, and sin some
He don't love me like I love him nobody could

Lord above me make him love me the way he should
I got it bad and that aint good
Now maybe I’m wrong to feel the way I do
I know my heart wouldn’t take somebody new
I got it bad and that aint good

Federico Boccacci

Never treats me sweet and gentle
The way he should
I've got it bad and that ain't good.

My poor heart is sentimental
Not made of wood.
I've got it bad and that ain't good.

But when the fish are jumpin'
and Friday rolls around
My man an' me, we gin some
and pray some, and sin some.

He don't love me like I love him
no, nobody could
I've got it bad and that ain't good.

Lord above me make him love me
the way he should.
I got it bad and that ain't good

Now maybe I’m wrong to feel the way I do
I know my heart would never take somebody new.
Got it bad and that ain't good.
