If I Had You
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could show the world how to smile
I could be glad all of the while
I could change the grey skies to blues
If I had you
I could leave the old days behind
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a new
If I had you
I could climb the snow capped mountains
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side
I could be a king, dear, uncrowned
Humble or poor, rich or renowned
There is nothing I couldn't do
If I had you

I could show the world how to smile
I could be glad all of the while
I could change the grey skies to blues
If I had you
I could leave the old days behind
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a new
If I had you
I could climb the snow capped mountains
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side
I could be a king, dear, uncrowned

Humble or poor, rich or renowned
There is nothing I couldn't do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's "If I Had You" express the pain and regret of losing someone you love. The opening line, "I'm so blue I don't know what to do," immediately sets the tone and mood for the entire song. The singer is feeling lost and hopeless without her lover, and she can't help but think about all the things she did wrong that caused him to leave. Bringing up the past and the decisions she made further reinforces her feelings of sadness and despair.

Throughout the song, the singer dreams about being reunited with her lover. She longs for just one hour with him, and in that time, she wants to do all the little things she's missed doing with him. This emphasizes how much she's yearning for his presence and how much she's missed him. The final lines of the song, "And I'm telling you for true you'd be anything but blue, if I could be with you," highlights how much the singer truly needs her lover to be happy.

Overall, "If I Had You" is a song about longing and regret. The singer wishes she had made different choices and didn't let her lover leave, but she's still holding on to hope that they can be reunited.

Her tone. Geesh. I think I just found a new voice to add to my library. Her name came up in an article I just read and I wanted to hear what she sounded like since I had never heard of her. Glad I followed my instincts. She should be way more popular.

CrossBonesAlex

One of the very best vocal versions I've heard.

Murp h

A wonderful voice ----she deserved more credit ---- a superb vocalist - go on girl ...

M.J. Leger

I hope she knows, wherever she is up there, that we love her incredible voice and presentation of a song, she deserved that recognition long ago, but didn't get it. She's been found and enjoyed once again.

Murp h So true! 💕❤️👍🏾

M.J. Leger So well-stated. Agreed. She brings me joy, her wondrous sound. Sort of like if Billie Holiday could've carried a tune. No offense, folks, but Billie was more famous for her troubles than her voice. Being honest. #EttaJones was a #Songstress, an #Intrepreter of the highest caliber. Much Love. ❤🎤

@TheKoolkanadian You are so right; Both Billie Holiday and Etta James had drug and alcohol problems that negatively affected their voices, but when asked, they would always sing when they probably should have quit, but money talks loudly! Etta Jones COULD have traveled the world, so could Shirley Horn, but both these great singers preferred to work in smaller groups for smaller audiences. Good taste can call for that often!

James S.

Etta Jones is Sarah, Ella and Billie, all rapped up in one lovely voice!🙏🏽

MJ Lejer

And the best talent of those three! But it's not really fair to compare singers, because they all have their style and sound, sometimes appealing to everyone, sometimes not. And it can also depend on the song.

Dottie LaBelle

This is HER song, No one can sing this rendition as superbly as Etta Jones.
