L.O.V.E
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

L is for the way you look at me.
O is for the only one I see.
V is very, very extraordinary.
E is even more than anyone that you adore can.

Love is all that I can give to you,
Love is more than just a game for two.
Two in love can make it.
Take my heart and please don't break it,
Love was made for me and you.

(That's almost true)
For me and you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's song L.O.V.E. describe love from a unique perspective. The song is based on the acronym L.O.V.E. where each letter represents a different aspect of love. The lyrics begin with L is for the way you look at me, which conveys how love is so powerful that one glance from a loved one can ignite intense emotions. When the song moves to the O, the lyrics communicate the idea that the lover is the only person that matters, the only one the singer sees, emphasizing the exclusivity of love. The V - very, very extraordinary, conveys the sense that love, over and above everything else, is the greatest feeling in the world. Lastly, E is even more than anyone that you adore can, means that love is an indescribable emotion that goes beyond adoration and makes the lover feel complete.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the significance of love and highlights how love is an essential part of life. The lyrics "Love is all that I can give to you, Love is more than just a game for two, Two in love can make it," communicate that love is the ultimate gift that one can give another. Love cannot simply exist between two people; instead, the two must work together to make it grow continually. The lyrics "Take my heart and please don't break it; Love was made for me and you," indicate that love is fragile and requires trust and respect between partners. The conclusion of the song expresses that love was created for the singer and the lover, and they are a perfect match.

It's very clear our love is here to stay
Not for a year, but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go

But, oh, my dear, our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

:)) :*

“Love Is Here to Stay” was the last musical composition George
Gershwin completed before his death on July 11, 1937. Ira Gershwin wrote
the words after George's death as a tribute to his brother’s passing.

Originally titled "It's Here to Stay" and then "Our Love Is Here to
Stay", the song was finally published as "Love Is Here to Stay". Ira
Gershwin said that he wanted to change the song's name back to "Our Love
Is Here to Stay" for years, but felt that it wouldn't be right since
the song had already become a standard.

Ella had the greatest diction of any singer. You never asked yourself, "What did she just say?" You understood every word she sang with that perfect voice. What a treasure she was!
