My Funny Valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
unphotographable
yet your my favorite work of art

Is your Figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little week?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't change your hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is Valentines day

Is your figure less than Greek
is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to Speak
Are you smart

But don't change your hair for me
Not if you care for me

Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day

Overall Meaning

The opening line of My Funny Valentine by Ella Fitzgerald calls the subject matter a "sweet comic valentine", alluding to the fact that while the subject is a love interest, there is something peculiar about them that makes them unique. The following line stating, "you make me smile with my heart", emphasizes the emotional connection between the singer and the subject, and how they bring joy to her. The next line, "your looks are laughable unphotographable, yet your my favorite work of art" further elaborates on the physical appearance of the subject, appearing to be somewhat unconventional, but still greatly admired.

The song then transitions to questioning the intellect and physical attributes of the subject, and their lack of conformity to traditional beauty standards. But the singer then acknowledges that these traits are not what defines the person they love, and that they shouldn't change for their partner. The final line, "each day is valentine's day", emphasizes the depth of the love the singer holds for the subject and how it permeates beyond just a particular day or moment in time.

Overall, the song is a celebration of the imperfect, the unconventional, and the unique, and how sometimes it's these quirks that make someone truly captivating and lovable.

Behold the way our fine feathered friend,
His virtue doth parade
Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made
Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent
Thou noble upright truthful sincere,
And slightly dopey gent
You're my funny valentine,
Sweet comic valentine,
You make me smile with my heart.
Your looks are laughable, un-photographable,
Yet, you're my favorite work of art.

I was born on St. Valentine’s Day and like a little monkey, was covered in hair. My beloved mother called me her funny valentine, much to the dismay and disapproval of the nurses. Thank goodness, she held firm to her acceptance for the rest of her life. ❤ RIP dear mother of mine.

The judges said that to the woman on Britain's got talent. She sang this song, and Simon said, "you could sing the phone book."

@stellas6474

Nobody sings this beautiful song like Ella Fitzgerald.

Some little super talented girl comes close. Look for "Angelina Jordan My Funny Valentine".

@@danl.4743 I agree with you, Dan.
I always said that this jazz song was the most difficult one in Angelina's whole repertoire and that the fact that she was flawless in its delivery, taking into accont her young age at the time and its primitive recording, makes it her best overall accomplishment.
Still, Stella is right too, since Angelina herself never intended to sing it "like Ella Fitzgerald". Like for all her covers, she woud sing it her way and makes it her own, which is what any work of art should be, not a copy, but an original.

The best ever
