Shiny Stockings
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Those silk shiny stockings
That I wear when I'm with you
I wear 'cause you told me
That you dig that crazy hue

Do we feel the romance
When we go to the dance
Oh no, you take a glance
At those shiny stockings

Then came along some chick
With great big stockings, too
When you changed your mind about me
Why, I never knew

I guess I'll have to find
A new, a new kind
A guy who digs my shiny stockings, too

Then came along some chick
With great big stockings, too
When you changed your mind about me
Why, I never knew

I guess I'll have to find
A new, a new kind

A guy who digs my shiny stockings, too
A new guy who digs my shiny stockings, too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald & Count Basie's song Shiny Stockings are a playful and flirtatious ode to a woman's stockings and the effect they have on the man she's with. The song opens with the singer describing her "silk shiny stockings" that she wears when she's with her lover, because he's expressed his admiration for them. The stockings are an example of the way in which clothing becomes deeply intertwined with our identities and the relationships we have with others. The singer is using the stockings as a way to captivate her lover and create an atmosphere of romance and desire.

However, the narrative of the song takes a turn when another woman with "great big stockings" comes onto the scene and captures the attention of the singer's lover. The singer is left feeling rejected and unsure of what to do next, lamenting that she'll have to find a new guy who appreciates her "shiny stockings." The lyrics are a witty and playful take on the age-old theme of jealousy and the insecurity that can come with romantic relationships.

In summary, Shiny Stockings is a fun and flirtatious song that celebrates the power of clothing and its ability to create desire and romance. The song captures the playful banter and flirtatious energy of a budding relationship, while also exploring the emotions of jealousy and insecurity that can come with these connections.

@Word...The song is a woman's song. So I don't understand why a guy would record it, say, Al Jarreau

Word Ninja

@Jay Young It was the 40's so jazz was the rap of the times and racism was strong. They shared a love of music that made people want that song and not be so concerned over who was singing it and what color their skin was. Al Jarreau probably did the song as a tribute, an homage to his is african american sisters & brothers.

Jay Young

@Word Ninja Hi there. Yeah. My point of view was subjective at best. Yes, Al did sing it. However, there are certain songs I feel that are gender restricted as well as color restricted. For example, Pinky Tomlin's "The object of my affection can change my complexion from white to rosy red. Anytime she holds my hand, tells me that she's mine. There are many girls who can thrill ..." I'm dark complexioned, so no matter how good one's imagination, the song just wouldn't be a fit.

But good point, Word. Thanks.

I miss Ella and Count.  Even in my early youth, my ear could distinguish between Count's band sound and that of Duke.
