Stompin
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Savoy, the home of sweet romance,
Savoy, it wins you with a glance,
Savoy, gives happy feet a chance to dance.
Your old form just like a clinging vine,
Your lips so warm and sweet as wine,
Your cheek so soft and close to mine, divine.

How my heart is singing,
While the band is swinging,
I'm never tired of romping,
And stomping with you at the Savoy.

What joy, a perfect holiday,
Savoy, where we can glide and sway,
Savoy, let me stomp away with you
The home of sweet romance,
It wins you at a glance,
Gives happy feet a chance to dance.

Just like a clinging vine,
So soft and sweet as wine,
So soft and close to mine, divine.

How my heart is singing,
While the band is swinging,
I'm never, never, never tired of romping,
And stomping with you at the Savoy.

What joy, a perfect holiday,

Savoy, where we can glide and sway,
Savoy, let me stomp away with you

Overall Meaning

The song "Stompin at the Savoy" by Ella Fitzgerald, written by Benny Goodman, Edgar Sampson, Chick Webb, and Andy Razaf, is a tribute to the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York during the height of its popularity in the 1930s. The lyrics conjure up images of a perfect romantic evening spent dancing and enjoying the music in the Savoy Ballroom.

The opening lines, "Savoy, the home of sweet romance, Savoy, it wins you with a glance, Savoy, gives happy feet a chance to dance" describes the allure and charm of the ballroom. The ballroom was known for its elaborate décor, large dance floor, and world-class musicians. It was a place where people came to dance and be seen, with a mix of both black and white patrons.

The lyrics go on to describe the beauty of the singer's partner, "Your old form just like a clinging vine, Your lips so warm and sweet as wine, Your cheek so soft and close to mine, divine." The dance steps are also mentioned, "I'm never tired of romping, And stomping with you at the Savoy." The "romping" and "stomping" referred to the energetic dance styles of the time, such as the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug.

Overall, the song captures the excitement and magic of the Savoy Ballroom and the culture surrounding it, which helped to shape jazz music history.

Talent that no longer exists in our society today.

@brucekuehn4031

I’m not sure that’s true because we don’t really know what’s out there. The real certainty is that it gets no exposure on our TV sets or radios. Who knows what talent goes unappreciated and unknown?
This was 1963. Ella first got attention at the age of 17 at an Amateur Night at the Apollo in 1934. By 1938, she had a huge hit with A-Tisket, A-Tasket. A person can start with some raw talent, but you don’t get to this level by singing in the shower. She learned from singing with other musicians and playing countless nights at clubs and then on the radio. Careers are built one step at a time. She sang 30 more years after this before retiring in 1993.

She's no Cardi B. Thank the Lord!

@bhodges00

What a beautiful voice and woman.
