Wanna Be Happy
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a very ordinary man
Trying to work out life's happy plan
Doing unto others as I'd like to have them doing unto me

When I find a very lonely soul
Soon be-kinda-comes my only goal
I feel so much better when I tell them my philosophy
I want to be happy
But I won't be happy
Till I make you happy too.

Life's really worth living
When we are mirth giving
Why can't I give some to you

When skies are gray and you say you are blue
I'll send the sun smiling through

I want to be happy
But I won't be happy
Till I make you happy too.

When skies are gray and you say you are blue
I'll send the sun smiling through

I want to be happy

But I won't be happy
Till I make you happy too.

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's song I Want to Be Happy, the singer presents himself as an average person trying to navigate life's challenges and find happiness. He identifies a key part of his approach to life: treating others how he wants to be treated. When he encounters someone who is lonely, he makes it his mission to try to befriend and uplift them by sharing his philosophy for living a happy life.

The chorus reinforces the main message of the song, that the singer's own happiness is not complete until he can share it with others. He states that life is truly worth living when people are able to spread joy and make others happy. The last stanza of the song reiterates this message, promising to bring sunshine even on the grayest of days.

Overall, this song highlights the idea that true happiness comes not from individual accomplishments or material possessions, but from the connections we form with others and the positive impact we can have on their lives. By prioritizing the happiness of those around us, we can create a more fulfilling and joyful existence for everyone.

Listening to Ella automatically injects "Class" into whatever you're doing - even if it's your Maths homework ;D

@78scott

It was released on a 12" 78 in a Decca album from 1937 called "Five Feet Of Swing". The other artists in that early album were The Dorsey Brothers, Jimmy Dorsey, Glen Gray and Bob Crosby.

@SELMER1947

Ella is great but never forget the genius of Chick Webb... Buddy Rich said that no one drummer never had Chick Webb's beat

@Hoopermazing

Wow, Ella sounds young on this recording. Her voice still had the same timber as on "A Tisket A Tasket."

@AndiChan123

I agree that the music is great, but I don't see why we have to insult other music while elevating songs from the past. Why can't we just enjoy it on its own merit?

@CORVETTEZEE

The stars of today become the music of the past............Enjoy all music, it's were we came from !.............Corvette Zee

@Acritarca
