don’t you think i ought to know
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

What they're saying, is it true
That your love is burning low?
If you've found somebody new,
Don't you think I ought to know?

Dining at the club alone,
I can feel the people stare;
Do you think I'm made of stone?
Don't you think I ought to care?

You know, darlin', I've always had
Such faith in you and the yarns you've spun,
But, like a fool, I've lived and learned
That half a love is worse than none

If I can't have all of you,
Though I can't believe it's so,
If you really mean you're through,
Don't you think I ought to know?

You know, darlin', I've always had
Such faith in you and the yarns you've spun,
But, like a fool, I've lived and learned
That half a love is worse than none

If I can't have all of you,
Though I can't believe it's so,

If you really mean you're through,
Don't you think I ought to know?

Overall Meaning

"Don't You Think I Ought To Know" is a poignant song by the legendary Ella Fitzgerald that addresses the questions and doubts of an uncertain relationship. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, as they capture the raw emotion of a person who is struggling to come to terms with the possibility that their partner may have moved on. Throughout the song, the singer is pleading with her lover to be honest with her and to tell her the truth about their relationship.

The first verse sets the tone for the song, as the singer questions whether her partner's love for her is fading away. She asks if he has found someone else, and if so, pleads with him to tell her. In the second verse, the singer describes the loneliness she feels when she goes out in public, knowing that people are staring at her and wondering why she is alone. She questions whether she should be more indifferent to what people think or whether she should care more.

The chorus is a haunting repetition of the phrase "Don't you think I ought to know?" which reinforces the singer's desire for the truth. She reminds her partner that she has always had faith in him, but she has learned that living with only half of someone's love is unbearable. If he has truly moved on, the singer wants to know so that she can move on as well.

In summary, "Don't You Think I Ought To Know" is a beautiful exploration of the complexities of relationships, and the pain that comes from not knowing where you stand with someone you care about.

Wooow, what an amazingly fast, pure, sharp and perfectly pitched voice Lady G has - better than that, it is a real vocal instrument.

It's like the sweetest blend of plucked steel strings and the best tone production and control on brass. Very nice vibrato too. Talk about flexibility and dexterity, the Lady has it.

Where did she get all that from...not the Macy's catalogue!

Such attack on each note. One of the most perfect jazz voices I've heard.

Love, andrea

this era is criminally underrated

@Mansardian

To each mind his own music. The problem: society gets dumber and dumber. Music reflects that. It is a mirror of people's mind.

@ssmith6974

Absolutely!

@rjr6912

Wait do you mean this era of music or this era of Lady Gaga's career? For you'd be right in both cases haha

@ssmith6974

@@rjr6912 I like Lady Gaga and she can belt it out, but it's hard to tell real 'raw' talent anymore with all of the equipment available. I was talking about that jazz era. Awesome music..it makes my feet move! Lol

@jayanirmala-lo3vp

Never underrated on that era
This is 40s to 50s era
