Stained glass eyes
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People sink your boat
When you cut a tragic figure
They drink their lemonade
And throw you a line

Boil your problem down
To yes or no, what's the matter?
They bomb your promenade
And this makes it shine

So you must play the comic
If they want one
And describe their moment
When they're in one

People pass you by
Passing up the chance to know you
They're irregular
In the usual way

You should crack a smile
Once in a while, it makes you pretty
It makes you want to give them
A piece of your mind

But they can't be people
Not if I'm one
If I have to be like them
I'd rather be no one

Couldn't make the scene
Not with all the people looking
All these connoisseurs
On guard all the time

Rather spend the day
Blank as hell by the window
Looking out of my
Stained glass eyes

La la la la la la la la la . . .

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elliott Smith's song, Stained Glass Eyes, are a commentary on the challenges of being an artist or performer, particularly one struggling with mental health or addiction. The first verse speaks to the tendency of people to turn against those who are struggling, to "sink your boat" when you are at your lowest point. Even those who know you and may want to help, remain distant and judge you, drinking their lemonade while you struggle to stay afloat. The second verse suggests that people prefer to simplify problems, to make everything a binary choice and ignore the complexity of life. They don't understand what it's like to be "bombed" by challenges and still have to shine for others. So, the artist has to play the role of a comic, to make others feel better, to make their own pain more palatable to others.

The next stanza speaks of the loneliness of being an artist, rejected by those who pass you by, who don't care to know you or understand your struggles. The artist is expected to always be "pretty" and to "crack a smile," playing their part, but the bitter irony is that they are more acutely aware of the failure of those around them to recognize their humanity. The artist understands that to be popular, they have to give people what they want, a moment of escape, something that makes them feel better about themselves. Yet, the artist cannot lose sight of their own integrity, choosing instead to remain true to themselves, even if it means being "no one" to others.

The final verse speaks to the lonesome nature of the artistic experience, where people are always judging, watching your every move. The artist would rather spend the day "blank as hell" by the window, avoiding the pressure to perform and entertain others. The song title itself, Stained Glass Eyes, is a reference to this idea of being trapped in a world where every action is seen and judged, where the artist is seen through a distorted lens, much like looking through stained glass windows.

Most successful artists will never come close to writing anything nearly as good as the songs Elliott considered his "B" material.

@CT-dv7vx

+Joe Bloggs elliott smith doesn't have "B" material

+Joe Bloggs Glad to see my use of quotes around "B" material hasn't been lost on the intellectual giants perusing youtube.

@paulhuff9421

Joe Bloggs he's the best songwriter to ever live. Ever. None of his songs are bad. None. No other songwriter has the amount of consistency that he does. There's good songwriters, even great ones, but there will never be another Elliott.

Elliott truly gives me the feeling of somebody embracing my soul, no other human has ever quite resonated with me as he does. Truly a hero <3

The older I get, the more I value Elliott's more obscure tracks. They're poetry.
