Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Now there's a feeling of joy in my heart
You know there was a time when doubt and strife controlled my life
Until I felt it would tear me apart
I was so lonely, waiting hoping for sight in the dark
And it was only the light inside that provided the spark
A sudden vision of the world around that pushed me to rhyme
Another range of possiblilties justified my time
No desperation no fear and no doubt
I use to kneel and pray I could some day break away
But I don't need to I've found my way out
I was so lonely, waiting hoping for sight in the dark
And it was only the light inside that provided the spark
Am I a madman out of control?
Or the only one aware of his soul?
My hideaway my place to stay
My refuge lies in metromania
My sanctuary, my satori
My freedom lies in metromania
Oh yeah
Am I a madman out of control
Or the only one aware of his soul?
My hideaway my place to stay
My refuge lies in metromania
My sanctuary, my satori
My freedom lies in metromania
The lyrics to Eloy's song "Metromania" convey a sense of personal transformation and liberation. The singer describes how they used to be controlled by doubt and strife, but now they see the world through different eyes and experience joy in their heart. The song suggests that the change came from within, as the singer found the light inside that provided the spark for their newfound perspective. They now have a clearer vision of the world around them and feel pleased with the scheme of things. The refrain "my hideaway, my place to stay, my refuge lies in metromania" suggests that the singer has found a sense of safety and freedom in their own thoughts and ideas.
The lyrics also pose a question: "Am I a madman out of control, or the only one aware of his soul?" This line suggests that the singer may feel judged or misunderstood for their newfound perspective, but they also feel a sense of confidence in their own understanding of themselves and the world. The song culminates in the assertion that the singer's freedom lies in metromania, which could be interpreted as a reference to their own mental landscape, imagination, or inner world.
Overall, "Metromania" is a song about personal growth, self-understanding, and finding a sense of safety and freedom in one's own perspective. The lyrics convey a sense of transformation that came from within, as the singer found light in the darkness and a new way to see the world.

With an album/track title like this one, were they alluding already 35 years ago to a lifestyle/person look concept that we're more familiar with only this decade - metro? Or is it just an allusion to the same Metropolis (e.g., Kraftwerk)?
