Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Say Is It Really True
Eloy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That the flame of hope has grown?
That the spirit has changed
That the few no longer stand alone?
Say, is it really true,
That the thought of war's lost its meaning?
That self-made devils died
The coldest nights finally followed by dawn;
An outburst of light,
That cures the blind.
A strong conviction has evolved in time
That life demands deeds we must define.
Say, is it really true,
That once buried virtues now arise?
That the being itself
No longer asks for a disguise?
A power that's been neglected, denied
Now blossoms and grows, calls out the best.
At last the change of an era has come
But there won't be much time to rest.
Say, is this the force I feel within
Heart and mind the truth?
Or am I deceived again, painfully abused?
Say, is it really true,
That the flame of hope has grown?
Or am I deceived again, painfully abused?
The lyrics to Eloy's song "Say Is It Really True" express a sense of hope and optimism for a better future. The song begins with the question, "Say, is it really true, that the flame of hope has grown?" implying that there was a time when hope was dwindling, but now there is a renewed sense of possibility. The following lines describe a change in spirit, where the few who once stood alone are now joined by others in hopes for a better future. The song goes on to ask if it is true that the thought of war has lost its meaning, and that the self-made devils of society are finally sinking.
The chorus of the song expresses the belief that the coldest nights are followed by dawn, and that an outburst of light cures the blind. The lyrics suggest that a strong conviction has evolved over time, and that life demands deeds that we must define. The second verse of the song asks if it is true that buried virtues are now arising again, and that the being itself no longer needs to hide behind a disguise. The power of neglected and denied virtues is now growing and calling out for the best.
Overall, the song carries a message of hope and positivity for a better future. It encourages listeners to believe in the power of change and to work towards making a difference in the world.
