Growing up in Peru, Elsieanne studied classical music in Lima and started composing at the age of 14. She immigrated to Montreal in 1999, where she met drummer Stephane Sotto, a self- taught musician. From the beginning, the two members have mixed more than their first names to form the group; they’ve shared influences and styles, like jazz, rock, electronic and world music. The melodies and lyrics of singer Elsieanne interlace perfectly with her singular and colourful voice, supported by the prodigious beats of Sotto. This creative fusion results in vaporous and textured compositions, swaying between a sensible pop and orchestral trip-hop.

In 2007, Elsiane launched its first album, Hybrid, which was very well received by the public and the media. The aerial and bewitching opus led the band to tour with Delerium and Beast, as well as to play the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, Osheaga and M for Montreal. These performances were a real consecration for Elsiane, which attracted many faithful fans with its stupefying shows, combining stunning visual and audio elements for an evocative, hypnotizing experience. After the buzz surrounding Hybrid, Elsiane has withdrawn to write new songs and to collaborate with Olivier Dufour for the Quebec City 400th anniversary main event soundtrack. The band also worked with Booka Shade, Delerium and performed for the Cirque du Soleil show, Le Royaume de Tôle.

Five years after releasing Hybrid, the duo finally presents its second opus, Mechanics of Emotion. Less dark than the first record, but preserving the hooking melodies and complex arrangements, this album is a true renaissance for the duo. The band self-produced this 11 track album of organic pop, with the collaboration of sound-engineer Rob Heaney (Patrick Watson, Cirque du Soleil).

I disagree. I used to think like you do, but now I know that music is simply taste, and if you think a certain type of music is better than an other one, you simply don't understand it well enough. Some people only listen to mainstream music because they don't know to much music, they aren't into the music scene and thus they only like and listen to what they hear when they walk around and turn on the radio. The only scale the music can be placed on is skill level of the musicians and the composer. There are good and bad ones of both in any direction of music. Saying that e.g. rock is worse than volk is simply ignorant.

You too can discover this. Every type of music speaks to you differently. If you don't like a type of music, the only probelm is that you don't yet see how it speaks to you. You said that Elsiane heals you. Try to understand how exactly. How does it make you feel? To what parts of you does it speak? Every song paints an impression. How does the impression of this song look like? Other types of music do the same thing, just with different parameters. Dubstep for instance often is extremely energetic and wants to put you into a state full of adrenaline where you think you can move mountains. Psytrance is very energetic as well and adds a layer of surreality and colorful, out-of-this world shapes to it. Gosples speak to your longing for simplisity and a sense of "everything will be alright" in your life. Classic music fills your longing for elegance, calmness and bliss. It's very difficult to describe these feelings, they're very complex, and different from person to person. But you can discover them too. I challenge you to listen to a song you really disklike every day for two weeks. You will learn to look at it from a different standpoint, and you will start to like it.

Lamb (with Lou Rhodes on vocals) comes close in many ways, though it's not as silky-smooth. "Fear of Fours" is a good album, and there are several more really good tracks on "Between Darkness and Wonder", "Lamb" and "What Sound".

I love the song and all, but what type of singing is this? It’s unique but it sounds purposeful. I have a feeling the singer’s actual voice is quite different from this. At times it sounds like a cat meowing (no offense) I’ve just always thought this type of singing sounds very catlike and kinda makes a song that’s supposed to be serious into something rather funny. (Again no offense, I just feel like I’m listening to a cat singing at some parts. Especially at 2:14 and 3:25. Sorry this is just what I’ve always thought.)
