Dancing in the Street
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have you ever had a good time turn bad
When the leaves turn brown
And the shattered glass just splinters

It's days like this that you can't resist
A long tall drink
And a big yellow sun in the winter
And you can go dancing
You can go dancing
You can go dancing
Dancing in the end zone

And you can go dancing
You can go dancing
You can go dancing
Dancing in the end zone

Did you ever pray you could stay away
Company excluded
From the curse of the family circle

In a big round room on the edge of the moon
There's a shooting star
In a race for the final hurdle

You can go dancing
You can go dancing
You can go dancing
Dancing in the end zone

And you can go dancing
You can go dancing
You can go dancing
Dancing in the end zone

No need to worry, no need to worry
No need to worry when you dance alone
You already made it, you already made it
When you're dancing in the end zone

You can go dancing
You can go dancing
You can go dancing
Dancing in the end zone

You can go dancing
You can go dancing
You can go dancing
Dancing in the end zone

You can go dancing
In the end zone
You can go dancing
In the end zone

You can go dancing
You can go dancing in the end zone
You can go dancing
You can go dancing in the end zone

You can go dancing
You can go dancing in the end zone

Overall Meaning

The song "Dancing In The End Zone" by Elton John is about finding joy in difficult times. The lyrics describe moments when things turn sour, and how to overcome them by dancing and finding happiness in the present. The first verse talks about experiencing a good time that suddenly turns bad, represented by the changing season and broken glass. However, the song suggests that even in those moments, there is still hope for enjoyment. The second verse refers to the desire to escape negative family dynamics, and finding a new space where hope can be reignited.

Overall, the song encourages listeners to not worry about dancing alone or being excluded, because joy can always be found in the end zone. The end zone is a reference to American football, where reaching the end zone symbolizes scoring a touchdown and winning. So, dancing in the end zone means finding joy in life's victories, no matter how small they may seem.

For me, this is Elton John at his best. So underrated.

@neoflyboy

It is. I would say that he was one of the inventors of soft rock, not many people can say that. A legend, a musical genius. Not everybody created songs for john lennon and played with him. 3500 shows and counting. Beyond passion.

@groovedigger00

Probably his most underrated single! This should have been much bigger than it was, and should be ranked up there with the rest of his classics.
