Friends Never said Goodbye
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There isn't much I haven't shared
With you along the road
And through it all there'd always be
Tomorrow's episode

Suddenly that isn't true
There's another avenue
Beckoning the great divide
Ask no questions, take no side

Who's to say who's right or wrong
Whose course is braver run
Still we are, have always been
Will ever be as one

What is done has been done for the best
Though the mist in my eyes might suggest
Just a little confusion about what I'll lose
But if I started over I know I would choose

The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and tought me that friends never say

Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye

Suddenly that isn't true
There's another avenue
Beckoning, the great divide
I would choose
The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and taught me that friends never say

Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye

Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye

Overall Meaning

Elton John's "Friends Never Say Goodbye" is a song about the bittersweet experience of growing apart from a close friend. The song opens with the singer acknowledging the depth of the relationship shared with this friend and the many experiences they've had together along the way. However, there's a shift in the song as the singer recognizes that they're both headed in different directions and there's a "great divide" between them. The lyrics suggest that maybe there's been some kind of argument or disagreement, and the two friends are unsure of what their next steps should be.

The singer reflects on the fact that neither of them can truly say who's right or wrong, and both have to make their own choices about which direction to take. Throughout the song, the singer cycles through a series of emotions as they consider what's to come. They're sad to be losing this person they care about so deeply, but they take comfort in knowing that they've shared a unique connection that will always be a part of them. In the end, the singer comes to the realization that while things may change, the memories shared between them will always be a source of joy.

Overall, the song is a poignant meditation on the experience of growing apart from someone you care about deeply. While it's sad to say goodbye, the singer focuses on the fact that their friendship was a valuable part of their lives and will never truly be lost.

I really don't understand why this film was so underrated. the plot was amazing, the phasing is perfect, the soundtrack is 100% on point, and the characters are very well fleshed out, like even the horse has more personality than half of the movie mcs nowadays! it's so bizarre to think this kind of movie was considered a "flop" back then. I'd give anything to see animated films like this again.

i had the same thought.

I had the Nintendo Color game!

Doc

The movie had more passion and thought put into it than most movies to this day.
I agree with what you said. I watched this movie and its beautiful every time.
it brings back so many memories. Both good and bad.

@Doc Contrary to your first statement, thought was unfortunately not put into the making of this movie. Everyone who worked on it has stated it was hell to make, the direction changed several times throughout the making of it, leaving everyone frustrated and unsatisfied with the end result. The crew was most certainly passionate, though - the scene with the ball game was almost cut from the film but the staff fought hard to keep it in because it was one of the few historically accurate things in the movie.
Doesn't mean I don't love the film. It's an amazing movie, and Tulio and Miguel are just the perfect main characters with the greatest dynamic!

I wish they would go back to 2d/3d animated movies. They spent a lot more time on developing a solid storyline and character development as opposed to the visual effects which are nice in modern movies but dang, if this wasn't such and original plot and a breath of fresh air. It's got buddy cop vibes, Indiana Jones vibes, even Tzekel-Kan, as one dimensional as his character was, delivered his lines with such conviction and emotion that it made you sort of root for him to rise to higher levels because he forced the other characters to surpass their limits and overcome. A great villain creates a great hero.

Doge The Dog

Nothing wrong with the way this was animated. Still amazes me that this is over 20 years old. I wish there were more movies that looked like this one design wise. Like actually drawn cartoons.
I guess doing CGI is easier than drawing everything

Fogo Brazilian Street Food

@Doge The Dog this is one of the last DreamWorks movies that still had 2d hand drawn elements.

The Prince of Egypt.
Joseph: King of Dreams
The Road To El Dorado
And Sinbad: Legend of The Seven Seas are the last 4 movies from DreamWorks to utilize the particular hybrid animations style you see in tRtED. IMO, other than Shrek 1 & 2, DreamWorks has struggled to produce anything that has captured my attention quite like the 4 movies I mentioned above.

Kevin Leroy

@Fogo Brazilian Street Food you forgot to mention spirit stallion of the Cimarron animation movies
