Recover Your Soul
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From "The Big Picture"

Baby you're missing something in the air
I got a name but it don't matter
What's going on, it's cold in here
You have a life but it's torn and tattered

Maybe you're losing pieces of your heart
You have a world but it stopped turning
You lose the day and gain the dark
Love was a fire but it stopped burning

Spare your heart, save your soul
Don't drag your love across the coals
Find your feet and your fortune can be told
Release, relax, let go
And hey now let's recover your soul

Lazy old sunset sinking like a tear
Alone at night in a losing battle

That perfect world is never clear
You have to fight for the things that matter

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Elton John's song "Recover Your Soul" are a plea to someone who seems to have lost their way. The singer explains that this person is missing something important in their life and that they may be losing pieces of their heart. Although they have a life, it is torn and tattered, and their world has stopped turning. Love was once a fire, but it stopped burning, leaving the person in darkness. The singer advises them to spare their heart and save their soul, to not drag their love across the coals. Instead, they should find their feet and let go, so that they may recover their soul.

The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is struggling with depression or some other type of emotional turmoil. The person is stuck in a dark place and cannot seem to move forward. The image of the lazy old sunset sinking like a tear is especially poignant, as it suggests that time is slipping away and that the person is losing precious moments of their life. However, the singer remains hopeful, encouraging this person to fight for the things that matter and to release, relax, and let go. Ultimately, the song is a message of hope, reminding us that it is possible to recover our souls even in the darkest of times.

Elton John was already a superstar by the time I was born, and even in 2023, he continues to be a superstar.

Beautiful memories with my mother 20 yrs ago! She used to ask me to play this song in my car when I used to drive for her. She passed away 6 years ago. Whenever I listen to this song i do miss her very much!

@hassangz

May she rest in peace, like all mothers with endless love

@TravelinBand747

One of my favorite Elton singles from the 90s. It used to play a lot at a store I worked at from September 1998 until October 1999. Would love to go back to the late 90s for a bit!

@AmoreenaXX
