John was raised in the Pinner suburb of London and learned to play piano at an early age, forming the blues band Bluesology in 1962. After leaving Bluesology in 1967 to embark on a solo career, John met Taupin after they both answered an advert for songwriters. For two years, they wrote songs for other artists, and John worked as a session musician for artists. John released his debut album Empty Sky in 1969, and a year later formed the Elton John Band and released his first hit single, "Your Song".
John's critical success was at its peak in the 1970s when he released a streak of chart-topping albums in the US and UK, which began with Honky Château (1972) and culminated with Rock of the Westies (1975). John continued his success in the 1980s and 1990s, having several hit singles and albums in both decades, and has continued to record new music since then. He has also had success in musical films and theatre, composing music for The Lion King, Aida, and Billy Elliot the Musical. In 2018, John began his ongoing farewell tour Farewell Yellow Brick Road, which is scheduled to conclude in 2023. The 2019 biopic Rocketman dramatized his life and career.
Outside of music, John is an HIV/AIDS charity fundraiser and has been involved in the fight against AIDS since the late 1980s. He established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, which has raised over £300 million since its inception, and a year later he began hosting his annual Foundation Academy Awards Party, which has since become one of the biggest high-profile Oscar parties in the Hollywood film industry. John was the chairman and director of Watford F.C, from 1976 to 1987, and again from 1997 to 2002, and is an honorary life president of the club. From the late 1970s to the late 1980s, John developed a severe addiction problem to drugs and alcohol but has been sober since 1990. He entered into a civil partnership with Canadian filmmaker David Furnish in 2005; they married after same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in 2014.
John has sold over 300 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has more than fifty Top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Hot 100, including nine number-ones in the UK and US, as well as seven consecutive number-one albums in the US. His tribute single "Candle in the Wind 1997", a rewritten version of his 1974 single in dedication to Princess Diana, sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling chart single of all time. In 2021, John became the first solo artist with UK Top 10 singles across six decades.
John has received numerous awards, including five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards; including for Outstanding Contribution to Music; two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Tony Award, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Disney Legend Award, and the Kennedy Center Honor. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and is a fellow of The Ivors Academy. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music and charitable services in 1998 and was appointed a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour by King Charles III (then Prince of Wales) in 2020.

Skyline Pigeon
Elton John Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway
For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
Of the world outside
Thinking of the ways
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey
For just a skyline pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
That he can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away, skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Fly away, skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mowed hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day
I wanna hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me from
This aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun
For just this skyline pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
That he can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away, skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Fly away, skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very
So very far behind
The lyrics to Elton John's "Skyline Pigeon" resonate with a longing for freedom, both physical and emotional. The singer of the song expresses a desire to escape the confines of the present, to "fly to distant lands" over picturesque landscapes of "green fields, trees, and mountains". Such images evoke the hope, beauty, and promise of a brighter future that may still be within reach. Meanwhile, the present is characterized by an oppressive atmosphere, with "a shadow cast in gloom" and a sense of isolation that contrasts sharply with the open skies the singer dreams of. Reflecting on the world beyond, the singer imagines the wind turning the tide and shadows changing from purple into grey, conveying the sense of impermanence, uncertainty, and chaos that often characterizes the human condition.
The imagery of the skyline pigeon, a bird that has been domesticated and is unable to fly free, is a potent metaphor for the human desire for autonomy and self-determination. The bird symbolizes the essential human need for freedom, creativity, and purpose. The song's narrator longs to be like the skyline pigeon, dreaming of the open and waiting for the day when he can spread his wings and fly away again. The song's emphasis on flight, on soaring above the mundane aspects of daily life, speaks to the universal human desire to transcend the limitations of our surroundings and connect with something greater.
Overall, "Skyline Pigeon" is a poignant meditation on the human condition, a reflection on the tension between the present moment and the possibility of a brighter future. The song's vivid imagery, haunting melody, and Elton John's soulful delivery have made it a cherished classic, inspiring generations with its message of hope and freedom.

Turn me loose from your hands
Release me from your grip
Let me fly to distant lands
Allow me to venture to faraway places
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Across landscapes of lush fields, towering trees, and majestic peaks
Flowers and forest fountains
Where flora and fauna thrive and freshwater springs abound
Home along the lanes of the skyway
A natural habitat in the vast expanse of the open sky
For this dark and lonely room
In this bleak and desolate place
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
There's a lingering presence of melancholy
And my eyes are mirrors
And my eyes reflect
Of the world outside
All that lies beyond
Thinking of the ways
Pondering the possibilities
That the wind can turn the tide
How the slightest change could alter the course of things
And these shadows turn
And these gloomy shades transform
From purple into grey
From deep to faded hues
For just a skyline pigeon
A mere bird in the sky
Dreaming of the open
Yearning for freedom
Waiting for the day
Anticipating the moment
That he can spread his wings
When he can fully take flight
And fly away again
And soar freely once more
Fly away, skyline pigeon fly
Take off, bird of the horizon
Towards the dreams
In pursuit of one's aspirations
You've left so very far behind
That were left far away in the past
Let me wake up in the morning
May I arise to a new day
To the smell of new mowed hay
With the scent of freshly cut grass
To laugh and cry, to live and die
To experience the full range of emotions, to live life to the fullest, and ultimately meet one's end
In the brightness of my day
In the light that illuminates my life
I wanna hear the pealing bells
I desire to listen to the ringing bells
Of distant churches sing
From faraway houses of worship
But most of all please free me from
Above all, release me from
This aching metal ring
This painful and restricting shackle
And open out this cage towards the sun
And allow me to spread my wings under the warmth of the sun
