Why Me Lord
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I've known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving you
Or the kindness you've shown.

Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I've need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.

Tell me Lord, if you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you.

Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am

Now that I know that I've need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.

Overall Meaning

Elvis Presley's song "Why Me Lord" is a soulful prayer asking for forgiveness and guidance. The song starts with the character questioning why he has been graced with so many blessings when he is aware of his own shortcomings. He then humbly asks God for help, acknowledging his own mistakes and thanking Him for the kindness He has shown. The second verse expresses the character's regret and recognition of his own flaws, asking for Jesus to help guide him back to a righteous path. The bridge asks for guidance on how to repay what he has taken from God and how to help others in the same way he has received help.

The song reflects a deep connection to spirituality and a recognition of the importance of humility and gratitude. It speaks to the idea of redemption and the desire for a second chance to make things right. The powerful vocals and honest lyrics make the song a moving and emotional experience for the listener. It also serves as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can always turn to faith for guidance and support.

I just love his Religious albums. Just listening to them and the way Elvis sings the hymns, he sings them from deep within his heart - so heart warming. I know he had some faults, what person doesn’t, but he was truly a God fearing man and so good hearted. God gave him a wonderful singing voice and gorgeous looks also in one package!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤❤🕺🏾🎶🎼💜💜💜💜✝️✝️✝️✝️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏RIP Elvis.

The greatest singer of all time Elvis Presley!
Elvis was touring singing all the songs that we all love and he told his friend I want to sing one of my gospel songs and Elvis didn’t know how the crowd would react so he sung how great thou art and the audience gave him a standing ovation with tears in their eyes. So after that Elvis would sing how great thou art at his concerts Elvis said he was happiest when singing the gospel he wanted to praise God he said if it wasn’t for god he wouldn’t have his voice. Elvis was an original he never forgot his humble beginnings always giving he never denied God in front of millions. He stopped a concert because people were yelling he was king he said there’s only one king and that Jesus Christ.
Elvis sings the gospel from his heart. 🙏
