Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Emeli Sandé Lyrics

I think this time I'm gonna make it 'til morning
I got strength within my heart
I'm gonna sing for all the heroes who've fallen
Yeah, I'm gonna take the long, the long way home
Yes, I'm gonna take the world, the world by storm
Just like the stars, we're gonna shine, bright and golden, ooh
We go bang down all the doors
Make sure we take back all the things that were stolen
Yeah, we're gonna take the long, the long way home, yeah
Oh, we're gonna take the world, the world by storm
See, with the heart of a sparrow
Oh, tell me what arrow could ever bring you down, mmm, yeah
Oh, the escape, it was narrow
But what a gift, the, the courage you found, mmm
See, with the heart of a sparrow
Oh, tell me what arrow could ever bring you down
Oh, the escape, it was narrow
But, but what gift, the courage you found, yeah
I got stars within my soul
I think the dust the end is gonna finally settle, but hurry
Pure as rivers, strong as mountains
We spread love like the flowers give petals
Oh, we're gonna take the long, the long way home
Oh, we're gonna take the world, the world by storm, yeah
We're gonna take, take the long way home, that's right
Then we're gonna take the world, the world by storm
Yes, we're gonna take the whole wide world by storm
The lyrics of Emeli Sandé's song "Sparrow" evoke themes of resilience, inner strength, and triumph in the face of adversity. The opening lines, "I got wind beneath my wings, I think this time I'm gonna make it 'til morning," suggest a newfound sense of hope and determination. The imagery of having strength within the heart and singing for fallen heroes conveys a sense of honoring those who have come before and drawing strength from their legacy. The repeated refrain of "I'm gonna take the long way home, I'm gonna take the world by storm" reinforces the idea of embarking on a challenging but ultimately rewarding journey.
The mention of magic in their bones and shining bright like stars implies a sense of innate power and potential within oneself. The determination to "bang down all the doors" and reclaim what was stolen signifies a refusal to be held back by obstacles or injustices. The lyrics express a sense of resilience and defiance in the face of adversity, with a determination to overcome obstacles and make a mark on the world.
The comparison to a sparrow, a small but resilient bird, symbolizes the ability to rise above challenges and find courage in difficult circumstances. The mention of arrows that cannot bring one down and narrow escapes that lead to newfound courage speaks to the idea of overcoming adversity and finding strength in the face of danger. The repetition of these themes underscores the message of resilience and empowerment in the face of adversity.
The closing verses, with references to stars within the soul and spreading love like flowers, convey a sense of inner beauty and the power of love and positivity to overcome darkness. The imagery of settling dust and the hope for a brighter future suggest a sense of resolution and peace after enduring hardships. The final declaration of taking the long way home and taking the world by storm reinforces the theme of embracing challenges and triumphing over obstacles with courage and determination. Overall, the lyrics of "Sparrow" celebrate the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity, inspiring listeners to persevere and shine brightly in their own journeys.
