Overall Meaning

Eminem’s “The King and I” is a rap song that displays the rapper’s cocky and boastful nature. In the first verse, Eminem uses a variety of metaphors to describe his status as a wealthy and famous rapper. For example, when he says “Money like a scroll, bitch, my paper long,” he is saying that he has a lot of money. Similarly, when he says “Longer than it takes a blonde to put her make-up on,” he is saying that he has a lot of money and is essentially compare his wealth to a common stereotype. Within the same verse, he also mentions his love of Elvis and compares their relationship to cellmates in jail. Eminem then flexes his lyrical abilities in the second verse, with rapid-fire wordplay and intricate rhyming schemes, taking aim at his critics and doubters, saying that he uses them as motivation to succeed.

The song’s central theme is Eminem’s desire to feel like a king, regardless of what anyone else says or thinks. He repeatedly tells his critics that he doesn't care about their opinions and that he’ll continue to do what he wants to do, while using a variety of clever wordplay and metaphors to express his thoughts. The song ultimately serves as a message of empowerment for his fans, encouraging them to follow their own dreams and not let anyone else hold them back.

Do you really think that an uneducated 19 year old Elvis in poverty trying to provide for his family really had the intention of stealing from black folks? That he grew up with and around?? That’s very unlikely. He grew up studying black AND white music. Blues, gospel, jazz, country, and many more styles. He did what he loved, ignoring racial barriers because to him, everyone was equal and certain styles did not belong to one group only.
Elvis’s controlling manager, Colonel Tom Parker, controlled every part of the business aspect of his career (often signing contracts behind his back, etc). If anyone wasn’t given proper credit, Elvis wouldn’t have known and isnt to blame.
Elvis did, however, give credit always to his inspirations, saying himself that it was black folks who created rock n roll.
There are plenty of white musicians that DO deserve the criticism for taking advantage of black artists, but Elvis was certainly not one of them.
Also, let’s be on the same page about what stealing music really is. “Covering” a song is not the same as “stealing” it. If an artist were to steal a song and claim that they had wrote it themselves or gave no writing credits to the original song, that would be stealing. Elvis never did this. He never claimed to write a song, own any genre of music, and was humble to reject the title of the King.

“He was an integrator, Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn’t let black music through. Elvis opened the door for black music.”
- Little Richard
