Digital Life
Empire of the Sun Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's saying that I've been gone too long
She says she's witnessed hundreds of hours
People they all just wander around
I'll get higher tonight when I know that you're here
Feel the digital life keeping me young
This digital life don't keep me warm
The time is ticking down to zero
She's praying that it won't run out
She says we've lost our sense of nature
People they all just wander around
I get higher to life when I know that you're here
Feel the digital life keeping me young
This digital life don't keep me warm
Give me iron for bones so I could be strong
Part of one family
It's never just you and me
Part of one family
Part of one family
It's never just you and me
Part of one family
I get higher to life when I know that you're here
Feel the digital life keeping me young
This digital life don't keep me warm
Give me iron for bones so I could be strong
The lyrics of Empire of the Sun's song "Digital Life" convey a sense of longing, disconnection, and a search for meaning in a world dominated by technology. The singer is standing in someone's room, possibly a loved one's, who feels that he has been absent for too long. The mention of witnessing "hundreds of hours" could symbolize the passage of time and the realization that people around them are simply going through the motions, lost in their own worlds.
The chorus reflects a desire for connection and vitality in the face of a digital existence. The singer feels a sense of elevation and rejuvenation when in the presence of the other person, highlighting the power of human connection to bring life and energy. However, the "digital life" being referenced is portrayed as lacking warmth, suggesting that technology alone cannot fulfill the deeper emotional needs of the singer.
The ticking clock imagery in the second verse creates a sense of urgency and impending finality. The mention of losing touch with nature echoes the theme of disconnection from the natural world and a reliance on artificial constructs. The repetition of people aimlessly wandering reinforces the idea of a society adrift in a sea of digital distractions, devoid of genuine connection.
The repeated refrain of being "part of one family" underscores the importance of unity and shared experiences in a fragmented world. The longing for strength, represented by "iron for bones," hints at a desire for resilience in the face of challenges. Overall, the lyrics of "Digital Life" speak to the complexities of modern existence, the search for authentic connections in a digital age, and the enduring power of human relationships in navigating the complexities of life.
