Empire of the Sun Lyrics

Huna blentyn, ar fy mynwes,
Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon;
Breichiau mam syn dyn am danat,
Cariad mam sy dan fry mron.
Ni chaiff dim amharu'th gyntun,
Ni wna undyn ???? thi gam;
Huna'n dawel annwyl blentyn,
Huna'n fwyn ar fron dy fam.

Huna'n dawel heno huna,
Huna'n fwyn, y tlws ei lun;
Pam yr wyt yn awr yn gwenu,
Gwanu'n dirion yn dy hun?
Ai angylion fry s????n gwenu
Arnat ti yn gwenu'n llon,
Tithau'n gwenu'n ????l dan huno,
Huno'n dawel ar fy mron?

Paid ag ofni, dim ond deilen,
Gura, gura ar y dd????r;
Paid ag ofni ton fach unig.
Sua, sua ar lan y m????r;
Huna blentyn, nid ces yma
Ddim i roddi iti fraw;

Gwena'n dawel yn fy mynwes
Ar yr engyl gwynion draw.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Empire of the Sun's song Suo Gan are in Welsh and translate to English as follows:

Sleep, child, upon my bosom,
Warm and loving is this breast;
Mother's arms shall close around you,
Rested by this love and rest.
Nevermind that you are weeping,
Quiet all that petty strife;
Sleep, dear child, and do not waken,
Sleep in peace, the gift of life.

Sleep in peace all through the night,
Sleep in peace while skies are bright;
In your dreams you'll see me smiling,
Moments peaceful, pure delight.
Angels guard you while you're sleeping,
Tender, loving, fair and mild,
Rest your soul in peace and comfort,
Sleep, beloved, like a child.

The song is a lullaby, originally written in Welsh and sung to numerous generations of Welsh children, and it's been performed and translated into many languages. The song is traditionally sung to calm down children, and the lyrics talk about a mother’s love, the safety of the child, the protection of angels, and the comfort of sleep.

Always makes me cry this film. I think the reaction of the brutal Japanese soldier to the song (which we are to assume he does not understand) is a big part of this scene's emotional resonance. I never knew this song was Welsh until recently nor had I read the translation but it always leaves me breathless and crying. This is a translation:

Sleep child on my bosom
Cozy and warm is this;
Mother's arms are tight around you,
Mother's love is under my breast;
Nothing may affect your napping,
No man will cross you;
Sleep quietly, dear child,
Sleep sweetly on your mother's breast.
Sleep quietly, tonight, sleep;
Sleep sweetly, the pretty of his picture;
Why are you now smiling,
Smiling softly in your sleep?
Are angels above smiling,
On you smiling joyfully,
You smiling back in sleeping,
Sleeping quietly on my breast?
Do not fear, nothing but a leaf
Knocks, knocks on the door;
Do not fear, a small lonely wave
Murmurs, murmurs on the seashore;
Sleep child, there's nothing here
Nothing to give you a fright;
Smile quietly in my bosom,
On the angels white yonder.

@DIEGOHGHable

Never managed to watch this film without crying at some point. Extremely powerful and poignant.

@guerramarioalberto

As a matter of fact, several times. In my case like three times. This one, certainly. Gosh. He is watching his unlikely friend preparation for death, while singing, of all songs, a lullaby.

@FuknNoName

The ending when he’s standing there in the orphanage, Abandoned is the one that gets me.

@GeometryPlayzlol

try not to cry while watching the movie

@Martin_Daniel

Pilots reciting without heart a song that reduces them to little gears, pawns to die for a distant "divine" power... and then the magnificent contrast of a boy singing a mother's lullaby to say a proper farewell with respect, even for enemies, boys like him.
A powerful scene.

@michael-seida

well spoken martin daniel. you brought that deep sence on the point 🙏 ✌️ 🌏

I don't think they were reciting the song without heart. They just weren't good singers like the kid. You can see in one of the following scenes how devastated one of the Kamakaze pilots was for not being able to do his duty as he saw it. We might think suicide attacks like that are reprehensible, but many Japanese who executed them were very proud of the role they played for their country.

@Martin_Daniel

@Fabsmaster5 Sure, and also sure others were terrorized to die at such a young age.

@melaniemills4505

Yep...definitely in my personal top 5 favorite movies of all time. ❤
