Runaway Love
En Vogue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you ready to roll?
Funky divas, with a cool isle stroll
Sending smooth vibes to all our great fans
It feels good to be grooving again.

Chocolate cream to me baby (so sweet to me)
Like some honey to a honey bee
I am drawn to you baby like a (strong magnet-oh!)
Once I'm there, there's no turning back
There is no real excuse, for take this abuse
I keep (running back, taking slack-don't know what to say or to do)
It's amazing, but I'm not crazy
I can't win it's a sin, so I feel I have to fight out

[Chorus]
Like a train on open tracks now
It's too hard to turn it back now
Feels good without a doubt yeah
Has to stop before it turns me out.

Oh I'm not qualified (to put up with games with out)
I've been hurt hard lately
(I'm not for being used) no more
Just a little lovin'
It's like a drug and I'm a drug addict
I just don't know why I just can't let go
I can't (walk away, fade away, everyday my love grows and grows)
It's cause of sickness
Or is it weakness should I cope?
Is there hope?
All I know is it's hard to go on.

[Chorus]

(High-h-h-h)Take me
Take me, take me(higher, higher)
(High-h-h-h)Oh, take me

[Chorus]

Oh, just a runaway love

Feel's good without a doubt baby
Has to stop before it turns me out.

Overall Meaning

En Vogue's Runaway Love is a song that speaks about the power of love and its ability to draw one in like a magnet. The song starts with the Funky Divas expressing their excitement and readiness to groove with their fans. They compare love to chocolate cream and honey, emphasizing its sweetness and irresistible nature. Despite being drawn to this love like a magnet, the singer laments the lack of control and the hardships that come with it. She feels abused and used, yet she keeps returning, unsure of what to do or say. The chorus speaks about the difficulties of stopping this runaway love once it has gotten started, and the need to put a stop to it before it causes any further damage.

The singer seems to be struggling with the idea of letting go of this love that she feels addicted to. She acknowledges that the love is like a drug, and she is just a drug addict. She can't seem to let go of it, and it's causing her pain. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but it seems that the idea behind the song is that love can be both sweet and dangerous. It can draw us in, and it can also be hard to resist.

That chant that starts at 2:56 where Dawn goes higher and higher as they other girls chant: " higher & higher"....is everything!! This might have been my favorite song from them they was unmatched vocally hands down!

@benjaminstarks4071

Agreed...they were awesome...and the way Terry is into it and then we get a side view of Maxine with her fine self!!

@@benjaminstarks4071 Agreed, but it was Dawn that killed this at 3:32.

They should've never broken up. That's pure unmatched harmony right there. Love EnVogue for life!!!

2 pennies per album...they couldn't agree on this sad state

@@ipodee78 Such a contract should have been certified as 'ILLEGAL' by the Better Business Bureau.

@tanyalake9152

@@ipodee78 - Terry was messing with one of the male producers/managers and that was one of the reasons why the group split. Dawn, especially/mostly, wanted all of them to get paid more and the other ladies were too scared to speak up. Heck. If it weren't for the four of them, so-called producers/managers wouldn't have had a wealthy lifestyle. Such a shame, and it's still happening in the music industry.
