Starting out life as Arnold George Dorsey, Engelbert spent the early years of his life in India, until his family returned to England in 1947. He first worked as an engineer and then developed his singing and performance skills on the club circuit.
In the early fifties, he took some time out from professional singing whilst he did his national service, and returned to performing in 1956. He continued to sing in clubs and recorded some unsuccessful material for Decca in 1958.
His big break as a singer came in 1965. It was at this point that Gordon Mills, the then manager of Tom Jones, gave Arnold the new name of Engelbert Humperdinck. The new name meant that he was given another chance at recording with Decca records.
Engelbert's recording of the country standard ‘Release Me’ reached number one in the UK chart and number four in the US. His version of this song is perhaps the most famous, and it is certainly the song that he is most remembered for.
Other chart hits on both sides of the channel followed in the shape of ‘There Goes My Everything’ and ‘The Last Waltz’.
He had sixteen hit albums in America between 1967 and 1979 and released his greatest Hits in 1974, which reached number one in the UK. However, his cabaret style of singing started to go out of fashion in the 1970s, and he found it hard to maintain a presence in the British charts.
He has, however, continued to sing live and has maintained success in this arena. Unlike his natural rival, Tom Jones, he has not chosen to adapt his style to breathe new life into his recording career.

More than a ripple, less than a splash
The heir to a long line of glory
Give me the moment and I'll give you a song
It's so good bein' part of the story
This moment in time
This right time of day
Oh, I love bein' with you and watchin' my life at play
My love in your eyes
Is lightin' my dreams
And the feelin's you choose
Have touches of blues and greens
This trip into time
This timeless embrace
I'm like a kid in a store, I'll always want more to taste
And no matter what comes I know the sun is gonna shine
Because of you and me, there'll be this moment in time
And no matter what comes I know the sun is gonna shine
Because of you and me, there'll be this moment in time
[Chorus]
And no matter what comes I know the sun is gonna shine
Because of you and me, there'll be this moment in time
La, la, la, la, la ...
Engelbert Humperdinck's song "This Moment in Time" is a beautiful ballad about the importance of cherishing the present moment and the love that is shared in it. The chorus sets the tone for the song, with the singer declaring that this moment in time is more than just a passing moment; it is an essential part of a greater story.
The first verse speaks of the singer's love for his partner and the joy of being with them at this moment in their lives. The second verse compares the singer's dreams to the colors of the rainbow, with touches of blues and greens, emphasizing the beauty and vibrancy of this unique and irreplaceable moment.
The bridge of the song speaks to the singer's desire to continue savoring this moment for as long as possible, with a childlike eagerness to keep experiencing new things. The final lines of the song return to the Chorus, with the singer repeating the assertion that, no matter what comes, the sun will always shine because of the love shared between the two.
Overall, "This Moment in Time" is a romantic and heartfelt ballad that encourages listeners to appreciate the present moment and to cherish the people they love.
