ANSWER ME
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just what sin have I been guilty of?
Tell me how I came to lose your love
Please answer me, sweetheart
You were mine yesterday
I believed that love was here to stay
Won't you tell me where I've gone astray?
If you're happier without me
I'll try not to care
But if you still think about me
Please listen to my prayer
You must know I've been true
Won't you say that we can start anew?
In my sorrow now I turn to you
Please answer me, my love
(If you're happier without me)
(I'll try not to care)
But if you still think about me
Please listen to my prayer
You must know (you must know)I've been true (I've been true)
Won't you say that we can start anew?
In my sorrow now I turn to you
Please answer me, my love
Answer me, my love
The lyrics to Engelbert Humperdinck's "Answer Me" speak of a lover who has been abandoned and is desperately seeking answers from his lost love. He asks what sin he has committed to lose her affection and pleads for her to tell him where he went wrong. He believed that their love was here to stay and he is yearning to know what went astray. He mentions that if his lost love is happier without him, he will try not to care, but also asks her to listen to his prayer if she still thinks about him. He asserts that he has been true and asks for a chance to start anew. He is in sorrow and turns to his love, begging for an answer to his questions.
The song's lyrics evoke a sense of longing and heartbreak that is universal to anyone who has experienced the pain of lost love. The lyrics are simple, yet emotionally powerful, and Engelbert Humperdinck's smooth voice and delivery only add to the poignancy of the song.
