Sometimes When We Touch

I'd rather hurt you honestly than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you on what you say or do
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much and I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I want to hold you till the fear in me subsides
Romance and all it's strategy leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer, still trapped within my truths
A hesitant prize fighter still trapped within my youth
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much and I have to close my eyes and
hide
I wanna hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I want to hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you and drag you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through and hold you endlessly
At times I understand you and I know how hard you've tried
I've watch while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters, still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister, but then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much and I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I want to hold you till the fear in me subsides
Engelbert Humperdinck’s Sometimes When We Touch expresses the inner turmoil of a man who has fallen head over heels for someone but is afraid to show his true emotions. The opening line of the song, 'You ask me if I love you and I choke on my reply,' sets the tone for the whole song. The singer clearly loves the person but isn't ready to commit fully. He values honesty and doesn't want to mislead the person with a lie - an honest approach that can be painful. He knows that he cannot judge the person for what they say or do, and he is only starting to see the person's true self.
The chorus of the song delivers a touching and poignant message. Sometimes, when they touch, the honesty is too much, and he has to close his eyes and hide. He wants to hold the person until he dies, and they both break down and cry. He wants to hold the person until the fear in him subsides.
The second verse expresses how the singer is struggling with his pride and insecurity, but his feelings for the person are too strong for him to let go. He feels like he is still struggling with his 'youth,' and he hasn't quite figured out the game of love. He acknowledges that he's just another writer trying to process his emotions, and still, he's afraid.
The third verse delivers a powerful insight into the relationship between the two people. The singer acknowledges that at times, he wants to hold the person endlessly, but at other times, he wants to break them down and understand them from an emotional perspective. He watched the person struggle with love and understands how hard they've tried, but also witnessed love passing them by. Lastly, it seems like both of them are drifters searching for a deeper connection, a friend, a brother, or a sister.
Overall, the beautiful use of metaphors and poetic language makes Engelbert Humperdinck's 'Sometimes When We Touch' both powerful and insightful.
