Entombed's debut album was Left Hand Path, a cult favorite that established the band as a popular death metal band. The follow-up, Clandestine, was just as popular. These first two albums were unique in that they featured what was sometimes referred to as a "chainsaw" guitar sound which became a staple of Swedish death metal worldwide. It was created using the Boss Heavy Metal distortion pedal and a Peavey amplifier. This iconic guitar tone spawned the niche sub-genre referred to as 'entombedcore' which consists of just hardcore bands using the infamous chainsaw tone as part of their sound.
After the Gods of Grind tour, Entombed began changing their sound into a mix of groove metal, hard rock and death metal frequently called death n roll. Although this may have turned off many fans, it established their mainstream and critical reputation. Wolverine Blues and Hollowman are widely considered classics of early 1990s death metal, but were followed by problems with various record companies.
In 1999, Entombed released Uprising, which was an anti-commercial return to the band's roots. The follow-up, Morning Star returned to Hollowman and Wolverine Blues style metal. They have since released 2003's album Inferno, a continuation of the 'death n roll' style that has become their trademark sound.
2006 saw the release of new music from Entombed, with the When in Sodom EP on June 6 (or 06/06/06), and the full length album Serpent Saints - The Ten Amendments was released on July 9th, 2007. This album is the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (of Alpha Safari and ex-Misery Loves Co.), who replaced long-time drummer Peter Stjärnvind in 2006.

Chief Rebel Angel
Entombed Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Experiment in moral and behavior
In spite of all imperfection I'm a fan of man
The worm is my rose too
Many my name
But one and the same
Chaos, being
[Chorus]
Phosphorous
Lucifer
Stand up!
In praise of the morning star
Phosphorous
Lucifer
Say it!
Chief Rebel Angel
Phosphorous
Lucifer
Stand up!
In praise of the morning star
Don't get too cocky, keep yourself small
Don't ever let them see you coming
Look at me, underestimated from day one
You never see me coming, I'm a surprise
Solid my game
We're one and the same
The chaos, the being
And the everlasting flame
[Chorus]
Watching, waiting
Holding my breath
But I'm no puppeteer
The stage is set, you pull your own strings now
Like butterfly wings
Once they're touched they never leave the ground
No,
I don't make things happen here
[Chorus]
Phosphorous
Lucifer
Say my name
The lyrics to Entombed's song Chief Rebel Angel present a unique perspective on humanity, embracing its flaws and imperfections while championing its ability to constantly experiment with moral and behavioral norms. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer has been observing humanity's evolution since its beginning, as if they have been an omnipresent force guiding the course of history. The phrase "the worm is my rose too" is particularly fascinating, as it suggests that something that may seem undesirable or repellent can still hold beauty and appeal. This line also introduces the concept of duality, which is echoed throughout the rest of the song.
The chorus of Chief Rebel Angel centers around the figure of Lucifer, who is portrayed as a rebel and a champion of individuality. The singer is calling on Lucifer to "stand up" and be recognized for his role as the "morning star" - a symbol of hope and renewal. The use of the name "Phosphorous" is also interesting, as it was the ancient Greek name for the planet Venus, which was associated with the goddess of love and beauty. In this context, Lucifer is being portrayed as a figure of light and positivity, rather than the traditional representation of him as a villainous tempter.
The second verse of the song has the singer warning against hubris and advocating for humility. There is a suggestion that the singer has been underestimated and overlooked, but they are still capable of surprising others. Again, the theme of duality is present, with the singer proclaiming that they are "one and the same" as chaos and being, as well as the "everlasting flame". These lines suggest that the singer is more than just a mortal being, but rather a force of nature or an element of the universe itself.
Overall, Chief Rebel Angel is a fascinating exploration of identity, duality, and the nature of humanity. The song presents an unconventional interpretation of Lucifer as a figure of light and individuality, and encourages listeners to embrace their flaws and imperfections while striving to be their own agents of change.
