Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out
Eric Clapton Lyrics

Once I lived the life of a millionaire,
Spent all my money, I just did not care.
Took all my friends out for a good time,
Bought bootleg liquor, champagne and wine.

Then I began to fall so low,
Lost all my good friends, I did not have nowhere to go.
I get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins.
'Cause no, no, nobody knows you
When you're down and out.
In your pocket, not one penny,
And as for friends, you don't have any.

When you finally get back up on your feet again,
Everybody wants to be your old long-lost friend.
Said it's mighty strange, without a doubt,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.

When you finally get back upon your feet again,
Everybody wants to be your good old long-lost friend.
Said it's mighty strange,
Nobody knows you,
Nobody knows you,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.

I know your comment is a year old, but I so appreciate the comments from people relaying their unbelievable right time/right place for seeing him. Im so, so jealous. He’s the one who’s live videos are better than the studio/ fancy tracks - which are fantastic.
I think hearing him is amazing, but seeing him play is something every human should see at least once. My young kids have - not appreciating him yet (he does have bad teeth and likely Jimmie had something to do with that smushed nose- I think he’s - he was - magical).

I wasn’t impressed at first - “oh yay, another guitar riff,” but it was always played in the background. One day I heard him loud (not enough to bother neighbors) and I woke up.Hello, I’m sorry, what? My other loves, Ella Fitzgerald and Pavarotti were also chance discoveries. Stevie and Ella got me through years of hours of driving in the dark with only woods in sight, because divorce.

But I didn’t start really to Stevie Ray Vaughan until I had a chance to breathe.
Albert King is amazing. I was BB 9 times. John Lee Hooker sat next to me to watch - somebody - I forget. So many.

I cannot find anyone who’s guitar just becomes another part of him - or who can play like the guitar and the man are so fluidly together. I don’t know the words. Albert King knew this. Just watch his face. Just googled best blues guitarist - Stevie doesn't even rank. Gotta disagree. Skill, precision, heart, vocals, technical skill. He wins.

I'll never forget seeing him in Miami 1998. His newest album out was Pilgrim. He was asking for requests and everyone of course was screaming "cocaine" and there was a pause in the yelling, it was all quiet and I then yelled to him, "she's gone". And, he looked up into the nose bleed seats where I was..... and he smiled and sang the song for me. I loved it, made my day.

I love how he opens up with a song that is about rich people who lose everything by spending money and thinking money is everything, to a venue full of super rich folks and celebrities. Well played.
