White Room
Eric Clapton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the white room with black curtains near the station
Black roof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment

I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves
You said no strings could secure you at the station
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows
I walked into such a sad time at the station
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning

I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves

At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings

I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eric Clapton's song "White Room" describe a surreal, dreamlike setting where the singer is waiting for someone in a white room with black curtains near a train station. The imagery of the "black roof country" with "no gold pavements" and "tired starlings" creates a sense of desolation and decay. The silver horses running down moonbeams in the person's dark eyes suggests a magical quality to this encounter.

The singer mentions waiting in this sunless place where the shadows run from themselves, suggesting a state of melancholy and isolation. They describe an encounter with someone who cannot be tied down, who is leaving on a train, and who they very much want to be with. The tigers crouching in the jungle in her dark eyes suggest danger and wildness, but also a sense of exoticism and adventure.

The final verse finds the singer alone in the dark with the lonely crowd, still waiting and longing for the person they love. The lyrics create a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty, suggesting that the singer's quest for connection may be doomed to failure or that their idealized vision of the other person may not match reality.

If only Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were with him for this performance! Imagine if Cream had reunited at Live Aid!

Reine H

That would have been great.

the holy trinity of the 60's would be backk

Yeah, it sounds like half the song is missing without them. Plus this was when Clapton was going really mellow with his tone. It just lacks the punch his work with Cream and his 70s work had.
