Éric Serra's father Claude was a famous French songwriter in the 1950s and '60s, and, as such, Éric was exposed to music and its production at a young age. His mother died when he was just seven years old. In the early '80s, Serra met director Luc Besson and was asked to score his first movie Le Dernier Combat (1983). Serra has scored all of Besson's directed movies to date, except Angel-A (2005) (scored by Anja Garbarek), and several that Besson has written such as Wasabi.
In 1995, Éric Serra was chosen to compose the score to the James Bond film GoldenEye, and produced a much more modern-sounding avant-garde soundtrack compared to previous Bond films. It met with mixed reviews from film critics. Serra's score is often criticized by Bond fans, and is considered the farthest departure from a traditional Bond score and, by some, as the most inappropriate in the series history. Others find it highly innovative, with the main problem the lack of John Barry's traditional theme. The producers later hired John Altman to provide the music for the tank chase in St. Petersburg. Serra's original track for that sequence can still be found on the soundtrack as "A Pleasant Drive In St. Petersburg".
Occasionally, and mainly due to his album released by this name, he is known in credits as RXRA (pronounced like his name, in French). An example is "Little Light of Love" on The Fifth Element soundtrack, which is credited to RXRA.
From 1980 to 1988, Éric Serra played bass guitar for French singer Jacques Higelin.
Éric Serra is also a songwriter, notably having written "It's Only Mystery" for the film Subway and "My Lady Blue" for Le Grand Bleu. In 1988, Éric Serra released an album of rock music titled RXRA which resembles the artist's name when pronounced as initial letters in French.
Most recently he composed the music for the new Criss Angel/Cirque Du Soleil show 'Criss Angel: Believe' to open at the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, in October 2008.
Serra has spent little time in front of the camera, choosing to work behind the scenes instead. However, on French television he has made a number of appearances performing music, and notably appeared in the Luc Besson movie Subway in which he plays 'Enrico the bassist'.
I Wanna Get Out of Here

Who would help my soul
Out of the cloud
Oh Lord!
Don't let the paint run down
Oh Lord!
Relieve my heart
Give it some hope
Just a little little little sign to be sure I'm on the way
'Cause I live my life in an empty doubting fear
And I wanna get out of here
I wanna get out of here
I gotta get out
'Cause I don't belong in here
And I gotta get out, now!
Scaling up my sorrow
Singing love
Aloud and proud
Oh Lord!
Don't let the people run down
I don't like the people running down
Oh Lord!
I believe their eyes
Could have more light
Could have more pride
What a little little little life
When you lose your faith in love
I'm sorry but my heart is not willing to sear
And I wanna get out of here
I wanna get out of here
I gotta get out
'Cause I don't belong in here
And I gotta get out!
Love is only light
As long as my heart is enclosed in such loneliness
My soul will be homeless
Fear is only lie
I wanna get out of here
I gotta get out
'Cause I don't belong in here
And I gotta get out
I wanna get out of here
I gotta get out
'Cause I don't belong in here
And I gotta get out
I wanna get out of here
I gotta get out
'Cause I don't belong in here
And I gotta get out
I wanna get out of here
The lyrics of Eric Serra's song "I Wanna Get Out of Here" express a deep sense of emptiness, doubt, and fear that the singer feels in his life. He doesn't have a woman who could help his soul out of the cloud, and he feels lost and alone. He asks the lord to relieve his heart, give it some hope, and make it shine, just a little sign to be sure he's on the way. The singer lives his life in an empty, doubting fear, and he wants to get out of here, to escape this feeling of being trapped and disconnected. He scales up his sorrow, singing love aloud and proud, but he can't overcome the fear that is gripping his heart.
The singer asks the lord not to let the people run down, to give them more light, more pride, and more hope. He believes that life is too small when you lose your faith in love, and he apologizes because his heart is not willing to sear. He doesn't want to live in fear and doubt anymore; he wants to get out of here and find the light and the love that will give his life meaning and purpose.
Overall, Eric Serra's song "I Wanna Get Out of Here" is a powerful expression of the human struggle with doubt, fear, and loneliness. The lyrics capture the intense desire to escape the feeling of being trapped and disconnected and to find a way to live a life filled with light, hope, and love.
