Window Seat
Erykah Badu Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, hey
Oh, oh, oh
Fell in love

So, presently I'm standing
Here right now
You're so demanding
Tell me what you want from me

Concluding
Concentrating on my music, lover, and my babies
Makes me wanna ask the lady for a ticket outta town
So can I get a window seat? (Hey)

Don't want nobody next to me
I just want a ticket outta town
A look around
And a safe touch down

Can I get a window seat? (oh oh)
Don't want nobody next to me
I just want a chance to fly
A chance to cry

And a long bye bye (oh-oh, oh-oh)
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh
But I, I need you to want me
I need you to miss me
I, I need your attention, yes

I need you next me
Oh I, I need someone to clap for me
I need your direction
Somebody say come back

Come back, baby, come back
I want you to need me
Come back (hey), come back, baby (oh), come back (need me)
Come back, come back, baby, come back (want you to)

Come back, come back, baby, come back (need me)
So, in my mind I'm tusslin'
Back and forth 'tween here and hustlin'
I don't wanna time travel no mo'

I wanna be here
I'm thinking
See, on this porch I'm rockin'
Back and forth light Lightning Hopkins

If anybody speak to Scotty
Tell him beam me up (beam me up)
So can I get a window seat? (hey)
Don't want nobody next to me

I just want a ticket outta town
A look around
And a safe touch down
Can I get a window seat

Don't want nobody next to me
I just want a chance to fly
A chance to cry
And a long bye bye

Oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh

But I, I need you to miss me (need)
I need somebody come get me (ooh)
Ah, see, I need your attention, yes and
Need your energy, yes I do

I need someone to clap for me
And I need your direction
Somebody say come back
Come back, baby, come back

I want you to need me
Come back, come back, baby, come back
Come back, come back, baby, come back
Come back, come back, baby, come back

But can I get a window seat?
Don't want nobody next to me
I just want a ticket outta town
A look around
And a safe touch down

Oh-oh, oh (hey)

I just want a chance to fly

A chance to cry
And a long bye bye

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Erykah Badu's "Window Seat" showcase her desire for freedom and independence. The song opens with a few lines about falling in love before transitioning to present day where Badu feels constricted and overwhelmed with life's demands. She wants to escape from her current situation and seeks refuge in music, her children, and her art. Badu indicates that she feels suffocated and needs to escape, asking for a "ticket outta town" to get a "window seat" on a plane. She wants to be alone and not have anyone sitting next to her so she can have some privacy and time to herself.

The song's chorus is a repetition of this desire for escape, emphasizing the need for space to breathe and recharge. Badu then expresses her need for attention, saying she wants someone to miss her and clap for her. She wants recognition and direction, and the chorus repeats the need to come back.

The second verse is a continuous narrative of Badu's internal struggles, constantly torn between wanting to be present and wanting to escape. She makes a reference to being "on this porch rockin'" and listening to Lightnin' Hopkins, a famous blues musician, before requesting Scotty to beam her up - a reference to Star Trek. The song ends with another repetition of the chorus, as Badu desires a chance to fly, cry, and say goodbye.

This video really had me in deep thought. It shows Badu walking at the site of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963.
The purpose was to “to awaken interest in a 1950s term called ‘groupthink’ in which a person is afraid to express themselves for fear of being ostracized by the wider public.”  The spoken word piece at the end of the vid confirms this argument.
"They play it safe,
are quick to assassinate what they do not understand.
They move in packs,
ingesting more and more fear
with every act of hate on one another,
They feel most comfortable in groups: less guilt to swallow.
They are us this is what we have become,
afraid to respect the individual.
A single person or event or circumstance can move one to change:
To love herself.
To evolve."
I admire how this vid represents artistic, social, and political expression. <3

BE Fernandez it's all these messages. Not one in particular.
Never be afraid to be yourself.
When we show ourselves, we become a target by those who hate.
We should all love, not hate form it is useless to hate.
Sometimes it takes a while to see how the world is holding us back. Hopefully we can realize the truth and enjoy being just us before it's too late.

Be who YOU are not what everyone else wants you to be...however funding someone who keeps you in check to not go too far...but also checks you with respect and not disregard who you are or trying to be that is truthful..,,that is the happiest time of life.

The main message at the end

Let's all stop being fearful of change. Or difference. Of each other

I remember long ago when this video first came out that my father said he would've cussed her out for walking around nude in public. I guess she was talking about him.
