Fall In
Esperanza Spalding Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We will never touch the ground
Don't worry if we fall in love
We will never touch the ground
Just fall into a dream
They say
If you die in a dream
Well
I just died in your arms
Lost in your eyes
And I know
This must be a dream
Cos I feel
Like I can fly to heaven
They say
If you live in a dream
You're hopelessly lost
Well
This ain't just any old dream
For our paths have crossed
And I may be hopelessly lost
But somehow
I've managed to find heaven
And don't worry
If we fall in love
We will never touch the ground
Don't worry if we fall in love
We will never touch the ground
Just fall into a dream
Don't worry if we fall in love
We will never touch the ground
Don't worry if we fall in love
We will never touch the ground
Just fall into a dream
In her song "Fall In," Esperanza Spalding takes us on a journey through the dream-like state of falling in love. She begins by reassuring her lover that, no matter what happens, they will never touch the ground. This line, repeated throughout the song, suggests that falling in love is not grounded in reality, but instead, it is an ephemeral experience in which the limits of reality and time do not exist. Spalding's airy vocals and ethereal instrumentation only enhance this dreamlike state.
As the song progresses, Spalding delves deeper into the concept of dreaming, suggesting that there may be consequences to the intensity of the emotions that come with falling in love. She brings up the idea that dying in a dream can mean dying in real life, so when she says "I just died in your arms," it is unclear whether she means it literally or metaphorically. However, there is a sense of abandon and ecstasy in her voice that suggests she is entirely lost in the moment.
Finally, she acknowledges that love, like dreaming, can make one feel hopelessly lost, but for her, it is a happy kind of lost because it has led her to "heaven." She ends the song by repeating the refrain "just fall into a dream," reminding the listener that the magic of falling in love lies in its ability to transport us to another plane of existence, where anything is possible.
Overall, "Fall In" is a beautiful, moody exploration of the emotional landscape of falling in love. Spalding's lyrics and voice create a dreamlike atmosphere that invites the listener to get lost in the ethereal experience.
