I Got Rhythm
Ethel Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?
I got daises in green pastures, I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble, I don't mind him
You won't find him 'round my door
I got starlight, I got sweet dreams
I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?
Who could ask for anything more?

Days can be sunny, with never a sigh
Don't need what money can buy
Birds in the trees sing their day full of song
Why shouldn't we sing along?

I'm chipper all the day, happy with my lot
How do I get that way
Look at what I've got

I got rhythm and I got music, I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?
I've got daises in my very green pastures
I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble, I don't mind him
You'll never find him 'round my door
I got starlight and do I have sweet dreams
I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?
In fact, who wants anything more?

I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?
I got daises and in green pastures, I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble, I don't mind him
You won't find him 'round my door
I got starlight, I got sweet dreams
I got my man

Who could ask for anything more?
Who could ask for anything more?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I Got Rhythm" by Ethel Waters describe the singer's happiness and contentment in life. She sings about having rhythm, music, and most importantly, her man. The singer feels as though she has everything she needs to be happy and fulfilled in life. The repetition of the phrase "Who could ask for anything more?" reinforces the idea of how content she is with everything she has.

The lyrics also mention the absence of trouble in her life. The line "Old man trouble, I don't mind him/You won't find him 'round my door" shows that she doesn't let obstacles or problems get in the way of her happiness. The singer recognizes the beauty in the world around her, such as the starlight and sweet dreams, and feels fortunate to have them in her life.

Despite all this positivity, the song doesn't ignore the fact that life can be difficult. The line "Days can be sunny, with never a sigh/Don't need what money can buy" shows that while things may look rosy on the surface, there can still be problems that money can't solve. However, the singer chooses to focus on what she does have rather than what she doesn't.

It'll have been an eternity and a half before the genius of the Gershwins is fully appreciated.

ik right

@jaykay1053

When “birds in their trees sing...” is sung slowly by Ella, I hear it as a tribute to all oppressed people. No doubt, the Gershwins had a little something to say about that as did so many of the singers who gave this song its heart through their performances, no matter the tempo.

Fantàstica Ethel!

Ethel started as a hot mamma and later she became very religious but in both phases of her life she had Soul in abundance.
