Look For The Silver Lining
Etta Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Whenever clouds appear in the blue
Remember somewhere the sun is shining
And so the right thing for you to do is make it shine for you
A heart full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
A heart full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life
Etta Jones's song Look For The Silver Lining is a song about hope and optimism. The lyrics suggest that whenever things in life seem bleak, we should always look for the silver lining, or the positive aspect of the situation. While clouds may appear in the sky, the sun is always shining somewhere, and so we should strive to make it shine for ourselves. The song speaks to the idea that a heart full of joy and gladness will always banish sadness and strife. It encourages listeners to always try to find the sunny side of life and to stay positive even in difficult times.
The song was written by Jerome Kern and Buddy DeSylva in 1919 and has since become a popular jazz standard. It has been performed by numerous artists over the years, including Judy Garland, Chet Baker, and Tony Bennett. The song was originally written for a Broadway musical called "Sally," and was later featured in the 1929 film "Sally."
